Am I Going to Get a Ticket? (Weird Cop Story)

Alright, this was a weird (and kind of interesting) night. First off, I have a provisional license, but I have driven with it for a year, and am thus eligible to get the regular license. I was planning on getting it later this week. So, I was driving 3 friends home (I'm only allowed to drive 1), and it was past 12 (allowed time to be driving).

Then, I may have sped in a 25 mph area (10-12 mph over the limit at the most, I still don't know if I was speeding or not), and I did not realize that the car behind me was actually a cop. So, I pulled into my first friend's driveway, where we were able to see that it was an actual cop, and he slowed down past his house, flashing his spotlight at us, turned around, and turned on his red + blue lights for a really brief time and slowly continued down the street. My friend saw him turn the corner and stop, waiting for me to come back out of the driveway and pass him. Me, being the brilliant mind that I am, went the opposite way of the cop, who soon noticed that I went the other way and sped up to catch up to me.

I continued driving to my next friend's house (cursing and practically breaking down at this point), and all this time, the cop has been flashing his white spotlight every minute or so at my car (I was hoping that my Cornell decal would deter him, lol!). Then, I made a quick right turn, which he must not have reacted quick enough to because he ended up going straight. Relieved, I continued down the street to drop my friend off, then saw the dreaded cop car pull down the street, and then once again turn around to follow me, with his white spotlight flashing every now and again. I then made a series of short turns, and the cop was not to be found again. The entire process of the cop following me was about 20 minutes, and happened down random streets, so it was far from a coincidence. He positively had enough time to get my license plate and any other information.

Now, here are my concerns. Can I still get a ticket or get in trouble if he did not pull me over? I am not supposed to pull over when a cop flashes his spotlight at me, correct? What do you think of my situation? Thanks.

I learned in my Forensics class (we had a lot of legal personnel as guest speakers) that the main reasons cops want to pull people over is because they want to see if you have drugs or are drinking (can’t blame them for thinking that if you’re driving so late and have a full car).

haahahah sketchyyyyyyyyyyy, Good job with the PO evasion though.

LOL. I think it’s fine. I mean, what would you possibly get a ticket FOR!???

No, you probably aren’t going to get a ticket. In order to get at ticket, the cop would have pulled you over for speeding or doing something that is worth handing a ticket out and you would have known right then and there.

He was probably monitoring your behavior especially if you were out late at night. He may have thought you were acting suspiciously which is why he kept on the alert, waiting for a time when you messed up and he could have pulled you over.

Okay thanks, my fears have been somewhat quelled. I probably was very close to doing something wrong since my entire body was shaking when he was following me. I was just so worried because I don’t usually see cops following people around for 20 minutes, constantly flashing their spotlights in the car, and even turning their red and blue lights on for a bit. I don’t blame him for being suspicious though, considering it was like 1:30 in the morning and there were 4 kids in the car…

If he had any reason to pull you over, you would have known it…

He was just monitoring you…
