Am I Hopeless?

I want to know if I have a chance at these colleges, listed in order of preference, which are:
1. Pepperdine University
2. Pitzer College
3. Occidental College
5. UCLA (Because I'm majoring in Art, will they consider my portfolio more than grades?)
4. UC Santa Barbara (I live in Calfornia, I know that helps a little)
5. Santa Clara University

Here are my statistics:
Ethnicity - Half Indian/Half Chinese
GPA - 3.45 (Unweighted) - 3.85 (Weighted)
SAT - 1860, ACT - 28 (Which looks better?)
SAT IIs: Chemistry - 550, Math Level II - 700
Class Rank: Top Quarter
APs/Honors Courses Taken: 3 APs, 4 Honors
Major: Studio Art (Does that help my chances?)
Essay: I plan to write about how I bring diversity into the college with my passion for art, and how my family was against me being an artist because they wanted me to be a doctor, lawyer, etc.

Extra-Curriculars: (In Order of Most Impressive)
Intern At Stanford Hospital - 1 Year
Community Service Hours - +300 Hours (Forgot the exact number)
Octagon Club Officer - 1 Year
AVID Tutor - 2 Years
Leadership - 2 Years
Art Classes - 7 Years
Track and Field Team - 3 Years
Tennis Team - 5 Years
Dance - 5 Years
Job At TDR Recycling - 3 Years
Assistant At Art School - 1 Year

I want to go to any of the colleges mentioned above! My scores are low, but I plan on majoring in Art because I am very passionate about it, and I hope to have a career involving it. I'm submitting an Art Portfolio to every college. I'm applying to some Jesuit Colleges and am not Christian, but I am Buddhist and Hindu and strongly practice them. Any tips for getting in would also be helpful! Thanks in advance for your imput!

lilaleasure17,

I like all of those schools but not necessarily for studio art. For example, your top pick, Pepperdine, is a good school but their art department is tiny and just so-so IMO. When I say tiny I mean microscopic. As in me, you, and that weird guy over there. Plus P-dine’s admit stats make this a high reach for you AND this is the ‘most Christian’ of the schools on your list. I like looking at the Pacific Ocean as much as the next guy but hey, there are better choices for you.

Given your stats, choice of major, and religion I would recommend looking at:

1.) Loyola Marymount. Much less religion, MUCH better art department, your stats make LMU a minor reach to likely match.
2.) USC Roski. They don’t care about religion, 1,000,000 x better art department, super reach for you but so is Pepperdine and USC is way better. No ocean view :frowning:
3.) Chapman U. Your stats make this one a match, a small art program but better than P-dine, less religion (none?).
4.) Have you considered non-California schools? There are a ton of good art programs where your stats would match.

Best,
Wheaty

PS. To any Pepperdine fans… for the record I like Pepperdine, just not for art.

If you plan to major in art why dont you have any actual art schools for consideration? I dont think a university would give you as good of an art education as an art school. Plus, grades dont matter as much.

The purpose of attending a university or a liberal arts university is to receive a well-rounded education. This is a degree or an investment that anyone can fall back on in case their chosen field didn’t work out for them. They will have enough knowledge to get into another field or job.

I agree with OCELITE, which is why I’m not looking at pure art schools, just schools with a good art department.

There are a few art schools that let you take liberal arts classes at universities - such as pafa and RISD. In any case, Carnegie mellon is would seem like a really good school to look at.
