Am I illegible?! Please take the time to read this.

Freshmen year I took all honors but by the end of the year I failed Geometry. I did a lot such as participating in Fairs, food drives, Christmas packaging, can drives , toy drives, fundraisers, petting zoo, thanksgiving organizations , raise money for cancer, volunteer at a prek, etc etc. Sophomore year was A NIGHTMARE. I took all Honors and 1 AP. I failed 1st semester Chem, 2nd semester Spanish 2, and had a D 1st semester AP World History. I worked my hardest to do well but I faced personal problems along the way and idk if colleges will overlook those grades if I explained my circumstances.I participated in Key Club, EcoFreaks, Cancer Awareness, and Open Mic(clubs). Over the summer I made up world history and worked for 8 hours in an Bengali Organization without breaks. Now I am a Junior with 3 APs and 1 Honors and a cumulative gpa of 2.6( OUCH!). I'm planning to volunteer at a Hospital, Library, Homeless Shelter, and join more clubs(EcoFreaks, Key Club, Japanese, and Cancer Awareness). I'm also planning to take Italian after school which is taught by a professor btw I'm currently retaking Spanish2. Will I be illegible for schools like NYU, Boston, or even UC Santa Barbara? Please help me.

As negative as this is, I agree with Batllo. I had 3 major surgeries and because of it I got a few C’s sophomore year, I was basically told that my extenuating circumstances don’t matter. The Brown admissions officer said, “Well, I don’t want to discourage you from applying, but C’s are pretty bad. You should try to have other schools you truly like.” Even though she basically said I won’t get in, I’m still applying. It sucks that Ivies/top tier schools don’t understand when you can’t help poor grades. =\

I don’t know what your situation is, but I’d encourage you to look at other schools. -_-

Sorry, i posted it twice. I didn’t think it was a crime.

No it’s alright

i haven’t taken them yet. I’m taking the PSATs this year and I’m planning to take the SATS afterwards. So if i do well…really well(hopefully) this year will it make a difference? They say Junior year is the most important of all the years but I’m so afraid and paranoid that i’ll fail again…

If you can’t manage your time, drop a few activities. Your grades are more important than your ECs. Only after you reach certain thresholds for testing scores and GPA do ECs begin to matter (unless you do something Nobel Prize worthy). You need to focus in on what you are passionate about. It’s wonderful that you like languages, but unless you intend on majoring in multiple languages, don’t bother with Italian and Japanese. You are obviously biting off more than you can chew, recognizing that you are gagging, yet still trying to stuff more down your throat. Get a hold on yourself and start trimming. One other thing: illegible means unreadable while ineligible means that something doesn’t meet preset requirements.

I was hoping this thread would contain a link to a sample of your handwriting and that I was supposed to judge said handwriting. A chance thread instead :(

It was a Typo, i meant eligible. well, Japanese club isn’t much about the language its just the culture. I might reconsider homeless shelter. Hospital is like 2 days a week and so is the library volunteer service. Italian is like once a week. How can bring my grades up? I’m taking AP Enviro science, AP US Hist., AP English, Honors Precal, Sp.2, and computers( I HATE THAT CLASS). How will i get As in them? I guess the real question is how can i raise my gpa?

I’m disappointed, too, Good :(

You’ll most likely gets As in the class by learning and doing the work correctly. If not, buy a pack of notebook paper for some extra credit.

sorry for the disappointment guys

SO BASICALLY, i have no chances into getting into any of my dream schools? Not even any UCs besides UCRiverside?

Probably not, as everybody else has said ECs only matter when you have the grades and scores to go with them (they do not compensate for low grades/scores). It is tough to balance a lot of ECs and school, some people do it well, some not quite as well, but no matter what GPA should be the focus. Have you considered going to community college and then transferring?

At least you weren’t told by an admissions officer  You should still apply to your dream schools though. I’m hoping I get a different admissions officer who reads my application at Brown and has some compassion and understanding. I don’t know much about UCs (as I have 0 interest in ever living in CA), so I can’t really help you there. Maybe if you get all As this year and next, maybe you’ll have a chance.
