I got into the University of Rochester through early decision and the letter mentioned how my extracurriculars played a large role in their decisions. However, I am struggling in school, particularly AP Calculus AB. Currently, I am probably looking at a D to C- in this class but Bs in all my others. Am I in trouble?

You will be safe with a C. However, try as hard as you can to avoid getting a D.

If you had multiple C’s and D’s they would most likely revoke it but I’m not sure how one D will effect you.

The best thing to do is to call the undergraduate admissions office and ask them. Don’t be afraid to ask because they ate the only ones who can actually provide a correct answer.

It could; if you fail to pass a class (generally considered a C or better) than most schools reserve the right to reevaluate your admission. If this is one outlier grade odds are pretty good you’ll be ok, but if all your grades have sagged as you seem to imply then things may be tougher.

One thing I strongly advise if it turns out you get less than a C is to contact U of R immediately and find out how this might affect you and what options you have. A lot of people seem to think that burying their head in the sand is the right way to go, asking “why should I call their attention to it?” as if they’re not going to notice when they get your final transcripts. Actually you come across better (to admissions committees, to managers, to your spouse, etc) if you quickly own up to problems. Further if you do so early on then you have more options, such as taking a summer make-up class, than you will if you wait until the middle of the summer when they get your final transcripts.

I also have a child accepted ed into Rochester who is also in danger of a questionable grade in an ap class. I believe he’s bringing it up but am unsure yet as the semester ends tomorrow. We also had this discussion if colleges revoke ed decisions. Overall his other grades are fine.

I don’t believe they would revoke after first semester unless you failed everything. They could send you a letter of warning to pull that grade up. Something you might want to think about is when the transcript is sent in, send along a note explaining the grade and telling specific actions you will be taking to get the grade up - staying after school with the teacher, getting a tutor, realizing you need to practice the problems more, etc.

I am not sure if Rochester has ever revoked admissions on grades alone, but I wouldn’t want to be the one to find out. But don’t panic, I seriously doubt it would happen at this point for one class.
