am i in or not/women in natural sciences.

HI! i am libby. i am new to this board. HOOK 'EM BABYYY! ahem. well anyway. back to the real business..

well, about a few weeks ago both my friend and i received an email congratulating us about applying to UT (hah for a nanosecond i was like OMG i've been accepted!... hah no. way to get a non top 10% student's hopes up, eh UT?). anyway the email was inviting me/us to join a residential fig @ ut called the women in natural sciences residential honors program (both of our first choice majors are biology). my friend is top 10% but i am not so it would make sense for her to have gotten the email but i was wondering why in the world i did? lol. it kind of lead me on to believe that i am in? i mean, for them to know that i have "outstanding qualifications" that means natural sciences has gotten ahold of my app someone right? i know that first it's the actual admissions committee that looks at your app then it's sent to your first choice major and such so i am just so confused. i dont want to get my hopes up because i still havent gotten any reply from ut yet as to my decision (i applied over thanksgiving break), but i mean if i know that i am in that would be a HUUUGEE lift off my shoulders!

can anyone tell me if i am in or not? thanks.

ps - i was looking around the site and it says that ADMITTED girls are recruited for this program butttt you never know...that may be last years rules or something. i am just so confused and want to know. i am still applying to the program just to see if i can get in but it would be nice to not have to worry for the next 4-6 weeks of my life till i get my admissions letter!

pps (i never shut up..) - has anyone else gotten this email? are you top 10% or not?

thanks for any replies.

--libby.

anyone? lol.

You couldn't have been in a few weeks ago. They started reviewing non-top-10% apps at the beginning of Feb. And I was expecting it to be out in March, but I guess miracles can happen :). I am not a Women so I can't say anything about the email, but if you want to post your stats, I think we could gauge your chances a bit better.

^ sorry, i wasn't clear. i applied around mid/late november [i know it was about a week or two before the scholarship deadline was due]. this email was simply saying congratulations on applying to ut austin and how they felt i was an outstanding applicant blah blah blah. so i got this email roughly about a month and a half after applying.

i'll post my stats but that won't really help much because i am one of those kids with a "special circumstance" - (abusive problems one semesterof hs caused me to become depressed hence my grades unfortunately suffered from this - yeah it sucks when you could have worked your way into top ten% but one semester screwed you over).

female (duh)

minority (i don't know if this makes a difference - some people have told me it does some people have told me that it doesn't)

used to be top 14% of class; post depression am now a bit away from top 25% of class.

1910 sat : 650 math 650 verbal 610 writing

4 extracurriculars -- 3 of which i have leadership positions in.

helped found a service league for girls in my area

national achievement program referred scholar - like national merit or national hispanic but for african americans.

about 4 academic awards via school

go to one of the best hs in my area

gpa was around a 4+ weighted before my downfall.

yada yada yada. oh yeah - im most likely gonna major in biology (natural sciences) or psychology (liberal arts). first choice USED to be bio but i think i am going to change it to psychology.

once again, congrats to you foxshox. i have been so scared because everyone keeps telling me since i'm not top 10% i have a snowflakes in hell chance of getting in. butttt i worked soo hard on those friggin essays, not to mentionthe fact that i turned in a letter of special circumstance detailing my situation + 3 strong letters of rec + an expanded resume.

and yes miracles DO happen. i know someone who was only top 25% (barely 24% i might add), slacked off, had so-so ecs and got into plan II honors! he had AMAZING essays and so i guess that got him in. so top 10% isn't everything (though it's still alot unfortunatley)
