hi
i've been here in the states since 4th grade
but i've been on a visa (H-1 i believe)
my family applied for a green card last year and on the greencard processing website it says our application has been processed.
i dont have my green card yet but like the bubble section for the nmsqt qualification survery said, i've applied for permanent residentship which the application has not been denied.
so my question is, what am i? and if i am an international, am i at a huge disadvantage admission-wise and financially? (im looking to apply to the top 15 or so schools)
btw, im a junior this year so hopefully it'll come out by next year before i begin to apply

yep, you are the in the cool kids club - THE intls

so how big of a disadvantage am i in admissions-wise?

you have no idea ;)

Depends on which country you are from. If you are from India/China, then it is a big disadvantage...

well I think it depends. Most colleges will consider you intl. until you have the green card in your hand but some are a bit more flexible.

Hey I'm in the exact same boat, cept im a senior..so this really is gonna affect my admissions .. and yes you are an international until you can actually present the college with a copy of your green card.

my green card has been in the system for about a year now .. and all of the colleges im applying to (ie stanford, Washu, CMU, Rochester) have told me to send in an extra letter explaining my situation and they will take it into consideration.

My college counselor tells me that it will affect my admission greatly especially at places like Stanford and others where they say internationals who need financial aid wil have a huge disadvantage (which is really depressing) but the fact that I may be eligible for FAFSA by next year will actually give me a leg up over other internationals.

However, a couple of colelges are letting me apply as a Perm Resident. I don't know if this is their general policy or because my college counselor has crazy hook ups .. but Carnegie Mellon is letting me apply as a Perm REs and letting me file FAFSA. If i matriculate, I'd have until july to get my green card.

Hopefully, your (and my) will come in before the admissions committee goes into session .. but for now .. try not to worry about it .. and concentrate on keeping your grades up and stuff because if you have to apply as an international next year... its gonna be extremely competitive.
