Am I making a mistake by turning down MIT for UCSD Comuter Science and engineering for 160k?

I couldn’t have afforded to send my son to college out of current income. Money came from 529 and savings since he was little.

MIT,is generous with aid, so they are stating your parents can afford to,pay for half, from assets as well,as current income.

still,it is a family decision. Sit down and have a talk with your parents.

Other than prestige, what would you be able to accomplish at MIT that you wouldn’t at UCSD? Are there things that MIT offers that UCSD does not? Would your coursework be different in a meaningful way?

No 1 vs No 15 is the Graduate level. In fact, UCSD is ranked 20th by Doctorate origin; joining Top 55 CS program (US News ranking) for last 15 years. However, UCSD has only one baccalaureate origin in over 1000 professors in the current 55 top CS program.

The level of undergraduate program is not necessary measured by the graduate program. Or limit of exploration by the undergraduate programs is different.

Just wants to be a programmer at a company, it would not be any difference. Hope OP is looking for a lot more.

Yes you are making a mistake. They only pay for college for 4 years… so what if it is virtually all their income during that time, many families do just that, it is called sacrifice for your kids. If it leaves then in a bit of a dip, take your MIT degree, earn some money and help them by doing something fabulous for them later. Financially strapped, overcrowded and struggling UCSD in the UC system over MIT? Is that even a serious question if MIT can be attained in any way?

Many parents feel there “ain’t no mountain high enough” to keep their kid out of MIT and would work 3 jobs or who knows what to get their kid to many colleges, a lot less prestigious than MIT. It actually sounds really doable for yours. GO!

@~~~, however, look at the numbers for Cal, which is an option if the OP has those type of aspirations.

However, wasn’t the OP admitted to L&S at UCB, so would need a 3.3 GPA to get into the CS major?

Congrats on your choices. Many parents would be thrilled to send their child to MIT. You got in, and from what you are saying they can do it. It is only half of their income (which sounds dramatic but it is for a lot of people), for a short time. They have been working for years I suppose… and it seems that they want to. I would. Good luck!

By alumni achievements, Cal is an Ivy-equivalent (as is, obviously, MIT). UCSD isn’t.

Another vote for MIT - the class size, academic atmosphere and networking is unmatched. You are allowed to take up to $5500 in students loans per year. It’s a drop in the bucket compared to the tuition, but it may make you feel a part of the financial process. Also, MIT students have a good chance of getting well paying summer internships, and that could also help defray some of the cost.

Having attended 2 of the 3 schools mentioned here for CS and being biased towards the UCs, I would still encourage my kid to choose MIT if he were fortunate to be admitted. I had a boss recently whose child turned down a free ride at UCSD to attend MIT, so you wouldn’t be the first to choose MIT even though it’s significantly more expensive. What awesome choices you have! Congratulations!

@CA2020 : what did you choose?
