Here's my list:

Rice (Early Decision?)
Stanford
UC - Berkeley, Los Angeles, San Diego
University of Southern California
Northwestern
Tufts
University of Pittsburgh (Instate)

Cali colleges are dream schools. Financial situation is pretty up in the air right so I won't know if I can pay for UCs til it's decision time.

I want to get into the best college possible that I'll be happy at. Rice seems to fit that mold and so I've been pretty sure about applying ED to increase my chances. I'm very afraid of applying RD, getting rejected, and regretting it.

I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA, 2250 SAT w/ 800 Math and will take SAT II Math / Physics soon. My extracurriculars are pretty average but I'm committed to volunteering with animals and playing in numerous orchestras. I plan on majoring in Biomedical Engineering.

Can anyone give me some sort of wisdom about applying ED / other schools I could look at? I want to go to Rice but I also want the freedom to review my offers and decide from there.

Apply EA if you want to review your options.

Rice has either ED or RD, no EA.

So you think your parents will potentially be able/willing to shell out $55K for the UCs?
If you want to review other offers you can’t use ED. Nothing more to say.

ED is for people who are 100% sure they would have no regrets attending the university. If you want to review offers apply RD.

Well there is your answer.

Then don’t apply ED, because you will have no other offers to review.

Why apply ED to a school that’s not your dream school? Are you willing to settle for Rice? If so, then they will take care of you financially for the most part. Just make sure you have enough money in case you get duped.

I’m 99% committed to Rice - If I was accepted everywhere on my list, I’m fairly certain I would still choose to attend. Realistically it’s the best option financially and academically for my future. The idea of ED just still makes me a little bit nervous as there’s 1% of uncertainty.

Also keep in mind that Rice’s ED acceptance rate isn’t much higher than its RD acceptance rate compared to other schools.

Rice:
RD: 14%
ED: 20%

Northwestern:
RD: 13.7%
ED: 32%

Johns Hopkins
RD: 15%
ED: 31%

if your only 99% then do not go ED. Only go ED when you are 100%+

@realcoolman Actually very helpful…would help me applying rd knowing I’m not losing out on too much of an advantage. Does anyone know if at Rice the app pool is just more competitive or if ed truly is an advantage?
