So, basically from the start Michigan was my safety school and my dream school was MIT. I got rejected by MIT...

I visited Michigan recently and was just blown away by all the engineering stuff. From what I saw, they have more than maybe even MIT has in the engineering department.

I've gotten into Rice, and might get into Harvard, Cornell, Penn, Brown, and Princeton tomorrow, but I think even if I got into all of them, I might still pick Michigan. Am I missing something, or is Michigan's engineering as amazing as my first impression of it?

My brother is a mechanical engineering major at the university of michigan and absolutely loves it. Michigan is an incredible school. The engineering programs there are especially solid and are definitely top notch. I believe the mechanical engineering program in particular is ranked in the top three in the nation.

a lot of people consider michigan to be an “ivy league of public schools”-- it is definitely respectable.

the best thing about michigan is people know how to study hard but have a great time letting loose too.

I also visited schools like Cornell and Princeton but they did not seem to have the same resources and programs that I saw at Michigan for engineering.

I would choose Michigan. You’re likely to be near the top of the class at the engineering school here, and IMO that’s much more impressive to recruiters than the average Ivy League engineering student.

I was also very impressed when I toured Michigan engineering last year. My husband is a Michigan engineering alum and enjoyed his years there. He said north campus is much better than when he was there. I don’t think you can go wrong picking U of M Engineering.

I just feel kinda foolish now that I spent so much time stressing over all my other applications when I had already gotten into Michigan, and I may in fact choose it over the schools I’ve been stressing over.

Buddy…As I recall you are also from the East Coast. I am as well and now am very proud to be a Midwesterner. All East Coasters should experience this part of the country. I believe that while U of MI has a diverse student population, it still has that midwestern feel and the folks are really good people. Experiencing a different part of the country would be a broadening experience for you as well as provide you with a top notch engineering education!!! GO BLUE

Michigan is underrated by the masses. It is certainly one of the nation’s leading universities, on par with Brown, Cornell, Penn and Rice. In Engineering, Michigan is actually ranked higher than all four of those universities, although Cornell is as good in real terms. I am glad to see that you have gained some respect for Michigan through your experience.

This said, Princeton is one of the nation’s top 5 universities and its Engineering programs are excellent. I would definitely recommend Princeton over Michigan. Congratulations!

Okay Alexandre…now where does BuddyMcAwesome’s 20K/year merit $$ go? Perhaps back into the pot and onto the next highly qualified person in line??? Wishful thinking??

Just wanted to share that my OOS S will be going to Cornell for engineering. He got very little merit money from U Michigan and a fantastic financial aid package from Cornell.
Best of luck to all of you attending Michigan - my son loved the school, but we could just not make it happen financially. Thankfully it all worked out in the end.
