Am I mistaken?

This is from Barron's SAT 2400 2nd edition.

Not only are fireplace tolls such as a broom, a poker, and tongs decorative, but they are
-A- ---B--- -C-
also functional as well.
---D---

I chose C for answer, but the book says it's D. The reason they give is that it is redundant. Wouldn't "but also" follow "Not only" in the beginning of the sentence?

oh wow… I messed that up…
um
A. Not only
B. such as
C. But
D. As well
E. obviously… no error.

original sentence is “Not only are fireplace tolls such as a broom, a poker, and tongs decorative, but they are also functional as well.”

I think using “also” and “as well” in the same sentence is a bit repetitive.

It is (D) “as well”

The first sentence says “Not only” xxxx but they also “xxxx”. No need for as well.

But isn’t the lack of “not only… but also” form a mistake? I know there is a problem with redundancy but aren’t there two problems?

The underlined part is only “But” which is not grammatically incorrect. But was used because of the word “not only” in the beginning. You are looking for errors inside the underlined parts. “They” refers to “broom, a poker, and tongs” which are plural. Without “they” the sentence would become ambiguous because they don’t refer to the fireplace or the “broom, poker, and tongs”.

D is redundant, and is the only error.
