Am I more of an International Studies Major or Communications Major?

I've always liked tv, radio, magazines, and that sort of stuff, and I think working for a travel magazine would be one of my top dream jobs. Would that be more of international studies or communications/journalism?

I feel like my application would have more of a theme if I went for the international studies major because I love foreign languages, cultures, and traveling. I can speak Spanish almost fluently and I'm starting to learn French. I was an exchange student in Spain for 2 months during the summer. I am president of Spanish Club and a member of French club. I'm getting ready to be in spanish 4 and take french at the local college. My college essay will be about my experience as an exchange student.

My top two choices are NYU and Northwestern and I think I have a 50/50 chance of getting in. Would it be beneficial to go more with a "theme" application and apply for International Studies rather than Communications. I know that International Studies majors are usually in the College of Arts and Sciences, which tend to accept more people.

This choice would be a lot easier if I knew what jobs I could actually get with an International Studies degree. Would a magazine even hire someone with an International Studies degree? I would think they would want someone with a Journalism/Communications degree? I know you're probably thinking that I should jsut major and minor, but I wanted to minor in French or Spanish.

WHAT do you think?

anyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyybody?

Go for IS. Communications isn’t too hot of a major.

But would I even be able to get a job? Wouldn’t magazines, tv channels, etc., want someone with a communications degree since it has to do with those sort of things rather than an international studies degree?

Why dont you just double major then.

Double major or major in international studies and minor in journalism…I know you said you wanted to minor in a language, but you can take classes in that language anyways and stil be able to put on your resume how proficient you are in it.

^ That’s what I was looking for. I just didn’t want to NOT be able to study languages beacuse I really like French and Spanish!

It’ll probably be easier to still be able to study languages if you major and minor than if you double major because then you’ll have more room for electives - or look at the requirements for the major at the schools you’re interersted in, I know in the International Studies major at my school you’re required to have taken a language through the advanced level for your degree so you may need to take some language courses for your major anyways.
