Am I officially done with the SATs?

I've taken the SAT three times and I think I've reached a point where I can no longer improve. I'm hispanic and these were my scores:

First time
530
640
690

Second time
670
620
720

Third time
600
680
640

Superscore: 1350/2070

Do I have to take it any more times?? I'm going to apply to these colleges:

UMich
UNC
Wisconsin
Emory
Duke
Tulane

BTW: I took the ACT once and got a 30 (32,28,28,30,10)

You have reasonable chances at Tulane, Wisconsin, and probably Michigan if SAT’s were the only criteria. Last two depend somewhat on OOS or in state. You might need higher scores for the others, depending on your grades, strength of schedule (AP’s and honors classes) EC’s and the like. Obviously you are an URM, so that helps. However, three times for the SAT is a lot, so more times seems like overkill. JMHO. I do know one thing though, and that is that you would be very wise to apply to a couple of schools where your odds of getting in are very high, and where you still think you can be happy. What people usually call safeties.

Good luck.

I would encourage you to take the ACT again rather than the SAT. I find generally my high school students do better on one of the tests over the other. From your scores, your SAT superscore and ACT are pretty much the same (Higher Education Professionals | College Board) - but the 30 is your only ACT try and I would consider it a baseline for ACT and take it again. Knowing WHEN you took the ACT would help, too. My son took it and made 30, then 32, then 33. 33 is the middle to top score of the MIDDLE 50% of your listed bottom schools - so if you are not a senior this year, my 2 cents worth is take ACT again. I agree with fallenchemist - 3 times seems enough for SAT UNLESS you are not a senior - then wait and take again in mid fall of senior year. Again, as a teacher, I have found kids seem to do better in their senior year, esp. if they study/review over the summer. Good luck!

Good advice t-bone. Makes sense to try the ACT at least one more time, especially. But I cannot emphasize enough the importance of applying to 2-3 schools that a student is virtually certain to get into. It doesn’t happen a lot percentage-wise, but there are always a percent or two of students who only went for the “prestige” names, and have to scramble when they don’t get into any of them. That’s still about 20,000 students!

You will not get into Duke or Emory with those scores unless it is as a URM. The other schools you mention are probably fine.

Yea I am a URM, how much do you think that will help me?

Different schools use different formulae for adjusting URM’s stats. Hard to say how much that will help. DOesn’t really matter what we say here regarding that anyway. It is what it is, or will be. You should apply to Duke and Emory and the others no matter, because except for a few $$ and a possible nick to your ego, you have nothing to lose. If you were way off the mark we would tell you. And again, that is only based on your test scores. We know nothing about the rest of your resume.
