Ok so I started off at a community college and didnt get straight A's in the sciences. I transferred to UC Berkeley as an MCB majr (cdb) with a 3.62 overall gpa; I was working near full time so thats why my gpa was a bit low. Heres what I got in my bcpm classes:

Class ( Units) grade

Pre calc (5) A
calc 1 (5) A
calc 2 (5) A
Calc 3 (5) B

Gen chem 1 (5) A
Gen chem 2 (5) C

gen phys 1 (4) C
gen phys calculus supplement (1) B
gen phys 2 (4) A
Gen phys calculus supplement (1) A

Gen Bio 1 (5) A
Gen Bio 2 (5) A

Ochem 1 (5) A
Ochem 2 (5) A

So thats what I got in community college. Right now I now I will get a 3.81 this semester if my grades dont change. Im currently taking elementary persian (5 units), MCB 102 (4 units) and an american cultures class (4 units). I have an A in persian, A in mcb 102, and A- in AC. Should I be ok for med school? Im a but worried about my C's in community college, but that was due to the hours that I was working.

Not sure how to read this with the information given. Most courses are 3 or 4 units, not five. Are you a sophomore or junior? Which grades are at Berkeley or at the Community college? Where are you now: Berkeley? Have you taken anything other than science?

Please save the acronyms for just a few familiar terms, like MCAT…. what is mcb, MicroBiology?

No one can tell you if you are “okay for med school”. We’re not the admissions committee, plus you’ve only given a few details. Have you taken the MCAT?

I’m at Berkeley and that list of courses was the bcpm classes that I took at my community college. Currently am at Berkeley and am taking molecular and cell biology 102 (mcb102) which is a biochemistry course. I have an A- I’m biochem and plan to hopefully get A’s in my biochem courses at Berkeley. I was wondering if my upper division courses at Berkeley were of more importance (to med school adcom) than my lower division courses taken at my community college? I also have a 36 on the mcat and plan to do research in the spring

I’ve been told that doing all of your pre-reqs at community is a bad idea, and it seems you’ve done just that. Obviously, the decision is between you and any advisors you may have, but you may want to apply after your senior year since hardly any of your “pre-med” classes will be from berkeley.

You’re asking if your upper division courses are of more importance, and they are if they cover the pre-reqs; as in, if you take a year of the upper div ochem series, it’ll cover the med school requirement of 1 year ochem and will look “better” since it’s not from a cc.

You’re doing well, number-wise, for med school. Good MCAT, good gpa. I should think the Berkeley courses were more meaningful for 2 factors: it’s upper level and it’s Berkeley. I think the fact that it’s from Berkeley will matter more.

But here’s the thing: coming from CA is difficult. The problem is there are more strong students in CA than there are seats. I kinda comes down to factors like how early you apply, applying broadly, and your recommendations. So it’s not the grades that will make or break you; it’s just one factor.
