I am a sophomore in high school, and I am wondering if I am on the right track for the University of Michigan. Here are my current stats. Let me know if I forgot anything.

GPA: 3.95 UW, 4.0 W

AP Classes: I took AP American History this year. I missed taking AP World History freshman year, as I did not know that my school offered it. I have already signed up for classes next year, and my AP classes are as follows: AP English Literature, AP Government, and AP Physics B. I plan on taking AP Biology, AP Calculus, and AP language Senior year.

ECs: I play in the school orchestra. I'm unsure if this would count as an extracurricular. This is all I have at this point. I know that this is a weak point. I've looked into volunteering at hospitals(my planned major is premed), but I won't be old enough to volunteer there until July. I may also get involved in an orchestra group that plays in the community.

ACT score: I haven't taken the ACT yet. I'm going to take it on my own in June and September of this year. Then, I will take it through my school. I am aiming for at least a 32.

Awards/Achievements: I received an academic award through my school, and I will most likely receive one the next two years as well.
I hope to get the AP Scholar award.
I'm taking the PSAT this fall. I am hoping to get the National Merit Scholarship.

I plan on working hard on my essay. I'm a pretty good writer, so the quality should be good.

I am in-state.

My class rank is 13 of 330. I expect this to improve.

My planned major is premed(in case you missed that earlier in my post).

I think I covered anything. Please let me know if I left anything out. I truly appreciate the feedback!

It’s hard to predict and plan out standardized test scores; a lot of people predict they’ll get at least ___ on the test, maybe assume a little too hard and not do as well as they thought. Your grades look great though, and you’re taking rigorous classes. Weak point is definitely EC’s, try joining a club/sport you enjoy and hopefully working your way up to a leadership position.

Definitely study for standardized tests, but as a sophomore it looks like you have a good, focused head on your shoulders and can get in if you want to.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! I plan on studying for the ACT over the summer. I know that it won’t be easy, and I plan on working very hard!

Your GPA is solid for UofM, and if you can maintain it in that range, then you will be golden. Also, work hard and try to get that 32 (or higher) on the ACT and aim to make merit semifinalist. Since UofM is a state school, your GPA and test scores are the most crucial factor taken into account. You are also taking a high number of APs, which is good.

However, your extracurriculars are lacking. Why don’t you join a few clubs at your school? Like you could try Debate or Model UN if u like public speaking or some academic team like Quiz Bowl. Whatever interests you, and you don’t have to do too many. A few in depth is good.

So if you continue to do what you are doing, join a few clubs/ activities, and write good enough essays, then I don’t see why you wouldn’t get in. So, to answer your question, yes, you are on the right track. Good luck!

Would volunteering count as an extracurricular? I’m really interested in volunteering at a few places. I honestly believe that I would enjoy volunteering.

Premed isn’t a viable major, just a heads up - it almost doesn’t exist. Volunteering is an extracurricular, though you should definitely show commitment towards an organization or it looks sloppy.

Thanks for the heads up! I plan to focus on hospitals and working with children, as I am studying to be a pediatrician. Would it look sloppy if I volunteered with multiple organizations even though I have a focus area?
