Am I on the right track..(Yale/Brown)?

I want to apply to Yale and Brown next year, but it seems like everyone has a ridiculous amount of EC's that they were in for four years. Does everyone join a bunch of clubs freshman year? My SAT is decent (2250, will prob take one more time) and I have a 4.6/3.9 GPA (3/600+) with solid classes (5 on chem AP, calc BC as a junior). However, I never really discovered my academic writing passion until junior year. These are my main EC's:

Cross Country (9-12)
Varsity 10 (CIF prelims), 11
MVP 10,11

Track (9-12)
Most inspirational athlete award

Writers Club (11,12)
We publish a book, and my teacher has given me an opportunity to write screenplays for her (her boyfriend is a director)
Will participate in Scholastic Art and Writing awards this year

Chinese Culture Club (9-12)
ICC rep 11
will run for president next year

Tartar Knights (10,11,12)
Volunteering club

Chess Club (founder, 11, 12)
President
Establishing a chess league between schools in our area
Helping teach middle school kids chess

Work experience:
Lab internship 10,11 (summer) Helped conduct and publish research
Grant writing (helped writers at the local marsh)

My EC's seem really sparse compared to most people. XC and track take up alot of my time (about 3 hours after school). I settled on my writing passion this year as a junior..I should have a decent amount of stuff to show for it. However, I didn't join writers club until junior year.

My recs will be good. I'm good friends with my sophomore English teacher, and she is my chess club sponsor. Do I have a chance at these schools? It seems like I joined some of my main clubs really late compared to everyone else.

You’ve got some good stats.

When you get to collegiate levels like Yale and Brown, they’re looking a lot more for depth and passion than a laundry list of ec’s. It sounds like you’ve found your passion in writing. Try to delve into that even more during your senior year in any way possible, and really emphasize it on your applications. That should be just an beneficial as if you had a larger list.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll definitely try to show my interest in writing.
