I know my EC's are pretty weak, but do you think I'm on track? With my GPA, would a 33ish on the ACT get me in?

I plan on applying ED to Cornell
--Either CAS (Math Major) or CALS (AEM)

Again, thanks in advance for all the help...

You seem to be weak in your humanities classes. If you’re applying for mathematics however I don’t know if they will care that much.

Either way, you are applying to math with no good math ECs. Do some impressive math ECs.

Please tell me what chance do i have for cornell university chemical engineering undergrad. I am an international student. no financial aid needed.

Sat scores CR-620, Math-680, Writing-630.

Subject test scores Physics 770, Chemistry 740, Math level 2 670.

High school grades: 91% in grade 10, 72% in grade 12. High school rank not reported.

Your SAT…

yes what about it

It’s lower than the school average, so if the schools dislike the EC’s and sports then it’s kind of unlikely.

what about University of Minnesota Twin cities and University of Michigan at Ann Arbor? What are my chances for those?

@jonty95
Go ask that question in the relevant threads.
And stop hijacking threads.

Your SAT I and SAT II Math scores are nowhere near stellar.
Your 12th Grade GPA averages to a C-.
Not trying to sound mean, but honestly, you’re not going to get into an Ivy League with scores like that.

im so sorry

It is good that you are on track to raise your GPA, Jason.

SAT is on the lower side (great score with no prep). ACT is better for now. If you can raise it to 33+ in April, that would be a competitive score.

Any leadership? In school, work, or temple?

You have a shot, how great I can’t tell you. I have no idea what the breakdown is by college or major, but here’s this year’s freshman class:

http://irp.dpb.cornell.edu/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/Profile2013-Freshmen.pdf

Last, AEM is super competitive. If you don’t have a compelling profile, consider applying to another major in CALS. You can always minor in AEM or try to switch majors later. Is there any other major in CALS you would like? Communication is the most business-y outside of AEM I guess: [Undergraduate Program | Department of Communication](<a href=“Communication | CALS”>Undergraduate | CALS)

The grading system in India is as follows
75% and up - A with distinction
60-75% - A
and so on.
The curriculum is rigorous and non flexible. We have to study whatever is available. There is no choice of subjects. I have already graduated from high school but decided to take a year’s break before applying to college due to financial issues.

A 72% average is probably different if it’s coming from India. Don’t lose hope Jonty!

Getting your ACT or SAT above median (it was 32/1430 last year) would help your qualification immensely, especially since u have no mentioned hooks, but again its the way u express ur interests on paper that will make it or break it. Dont worry too much about ‘weak’ ECs- I didn’t start getting ‘good’ ECs until I was a senior, so u have alot of time. Start looking for math/science summer programs, leadership opportunities, or a lot of volunteer activities between now and ur senior year. At the very least, u will have more to write about in ur essays.

Good luck Jason!

1430? That does NOT sound like the average for Cornell. I highly doubt that.

Obviously CR+M…

Is that obvious? I wouldn’t think so.

I said Median, NOT Average

And the stats are true according to their 2017 profile,
http://irp.dpb.cornell.edu/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/Profile2013-Freshmen.pdf

The SAT scores vary significantly by college within the university. (For example, the 75th % for Math for Engineering is 800. For all I know, the median may be also.) The Class of 2017 profile represents enrolled students, not accepted. To the extent that Cornell does not enjoy 100% yield, the enrolled students’ stats will be some number lower than the accepted students’ stats.

An unhooked applicant would do well to have his scores closer to the 75th % than the median.

Regarding Ivy League admissions, it’s safe to assume any SAT score < 1600 is out of 1600. Otherwise, there’s no point in applying…schools don’t have cut off scores, but it’s (subjectively) obvious that a student with a 1430/2400 has even a 1% chance at getting into an Ivy…
