Your stats definitely look good… But definitely try to do well on the SAT. Your EC’s look good so just remember to keep your numbers up and you’re in!

Thank you for the lovely comments, and I shall deeply take them to heart…

Whatever, back to being serious. My English teacher (I will have him next year as well) says that I’m a very strong writer and I do perform well in his class. I classify myself as a strong writer as well, and just because you read one post where I was defensive does not mean I write that way all the time obviously. The admissions process is a rollercoaster of emotions, and we can never be truly prepared for it in my opinion. I just keep charging along and do my best, patiently going where life is taking me.

BTW IRLJunkie, would you not say that you are fairly pesky? I can’t seem to recall you actually posting anything good about me ever, which is a bit weird. Do you have a vendetta against me or something? You’re one of the very few people on CC who has nothing nice to say to me. Oh well, you apperently don’t like me very much and I accept that. In the words of Stephen Colbert, “I accept your apology.”

Thank you, Cookies! I appreciate the kind comments and I will keep working hard. Best of luck to you! :)

big dreamer: I’m honestly sorry if I offended you, that was not the intention. I was just saying you seem to be a bit over-obsessed with this whole chancing thing. What “set me off”? I went to three different chancing pages, all three of which you posted a short reply asking for a chance-back. I’m not implicating anything about you as a person, I’m just saying you really need to chill. This time last year i was doing what you are doing now, and honestly, the best thing I can advise you is to just take it step by step and goo slowly. Also, I was simply saying, as many before me have, chancing at this point is pretty much impossible.

Now, if you want my opinion, you are looking good grade-wise, etc. Just really focus on getting the grades and I would utilize every other aspect of this website. I wish I had found it sooner! I know your intentions are innocent because you are an eager sophomore, and that’s great, but I suggest you just become a little less obsessed because you posted your stats in almost every Ivy page, on the Chances page, some College pages, and also you’ve asked for a myriad of chance backs. I’m not trying to attack you man! I’m just giving you my own advice.

Thanks dreamsofivy…I guess I read your post the wrong way. Yeah, I have chanced a lot lately, but I guess that was a way to gey my mind off my AP exam last week. The weather was really bad so I couldn’t shoot hoops, which is what I normally do. If I offended you, I’m sorry (my intentions were innocent as you said and I took your advice the WRONG way). I wasn’t trying to lure people to my pages with generic posts, I really tried to help them and wanted some help back. Anyway, I didn’t know where to originally post my thread when I first checked out CC, so I figured what’s wrong with putting it all over the place (bad choice that I recognize now).

BTW, what do you mean by “all of the aspects of this site”? I love CC, but is there a certain part that I should check out?

I read that you want to go to Brown, and I wish you the best of luck on going there! It’s a lovely place and my dream school as well. ;)

i’d say you have a solid chance for the schools you’re looking at.
but you’re planning on taking AP Calc your senior year, right? Don’t give that up; its important.

You should also look into five year programs, where after five years you can get a B.A. and a B.S. - you can also do that as a three-two program through two separate colleges.
just something you might want to look in to- i know hopkins does it, as does MIT (with harvard)

you should look into Mu Alpha Theta (if you haven’t already) especially with such obvious strong skills in mathematics.

Also, what about SAT IIs? Many of the schools you are looking at, especially for engineering, will at least require Math Level I and/or Math Level II and at least one science SAT subject test

hopkins will probably be hard just from the fact that you have to claim biomedical engineering as your major when you apply, and they can only take so many people interested in that major.

Yeah, I think that for Mu Alpha Theta, you have to be a junior or senior at my school-we apparently don’t like to make exceptions. Anyway, I haven’t taken the SAT or any subject test yet so I’ll look into that in the fall.

The plan is for me to take AP Calc senior year, so I’m still on track for that, and I don’t really want to be a part of the three-two programs because I may like one school too much to leave (although the Harvard/MIT combo is scintillating becuase of the amazing instruction one could receive).

Yes, unfortunately, Hopkins is known for BME, and that hardens admissions greatly, but I think that I’ll just try my hand at attempting to get in (with luck, who knows what will happen!).

Thanks augustagurrl for the advice! :)

Prep for your SAT/ACT/SATIIs (SATIIs especially important for HYPSM). Prep for your PSAT! Don’t make the same mistake I did and miss out on the opportunity for NM scholarships. Make good relationships with your teachers (preferably your junior year AP teachers) so you can get 2-3 stellar recommendations. Read this for an idea of a good recommendation: [MIT Admissions | Info For Schools & Counselors: Writing Evaluations](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/schools/writing_evaluations/index.shtml). I showed that to the teachers that wrote mine and got 2 excellent recs that definitely helped me get accepted to YS. Write PERSONAL and preferably informal essays. Just try to come off across as REAL a person as you can. For the short answers (like on Princeton and Yale’s app), answer TRUTHFULLY. My answers didn’t have to do with anything academic. They were either related to my EC’s or just w/e the truth was. Your ECs/Class Rank/Courseload looks EXCELLENT so far. You may want to look into “competitions.” Probably the weakest part of my application was the “Honors and Awards” section. I barely did any competitions and as a result barely had any awards. There are plenty of ways to find competitions, so keep on the look out. Just keep doing what your doing and good luck!

Just write great essays, and even Harvard won’t too much of a reach :)

mu alpha theta requires three years of mathematics.
you have to double up on math one of your first two years to get inducted early.
at least, thats how it is at most schools.

You efforts to make your courses look all professional and hard is kinda weird and obvious…

like “Clarinet Independent Study” and then 1st chair pit? to me, that doesn’t make sense. And what’s up with “Lower register specialist”…as far as I know, there is no such thing as “Register Specialists” in band. Either you’re good and play the upper octaves, or you suck and you just blow low notes in the back. Lol.

By clarinet indepenent study, I mean that my school does not have a band class and I practice on my own (no time for lessons).

By “lower register specialist,” I mean that I was the best at playing lower octaves at my school and always took on those parts (girl who was overall better player than me still didn’t play as well at lower octaves). I can play upper octaves very well in fact, but I had a better lower register sound than the guy who played bass clarinet even. (LOL at your comment, though!)

The pit band (at my new school) only performs for school musicals and we don’t spend much time at all, hence my independent study. I really miss band class, as it was a mental break and fun class. BTW, I’m first chair here (as opposed to 2nd chair at my school last year).

IIPitch, thanks for the link and it’s extremely helpful! The two teachers that I have the best relationship with now (sophomore teachers) are also my AP teachers next year, so I figure that this will definitely help me.

Wow, supersizeme, that comment is really nice, but Harvard not being too much of a reach? Wow wow wow!!! I wish that this was set in stone because that would boost EVERYONE’S confidence, if you know what I mean!!! LOL

Thanks for the great input everybody!

Hey everyone, I have a few quick questions:

Will sending in a portfolio of my inventions and other innovations help?

If I apply for like 15 grand a year FA (meaning paying only 35,000 annually), is that too much of a deterrent (or even possible)?

What other good national competitions can I enter in? Or even ones in NC? I do science Olympiad, and got 19th in the state with a broken catapult and just constructed an exceptional rocket for the Egg-O-Naut division next year. Place 2nd in Remote sensing and Catapult at regional level.

Would debate still look like a good EC (I enjoy it) if I am more of a math/science person? I tied for 2nd place in my first tourney, and got 10th at the largest tourney in NC (not STATE Championships-could not make it to this tourney).

Is this a good competition: Tied first at “X University” (state school) Spanish culture bee.

Thanks for reading this! :)

Well your ECs look great as is your GPA! Im sure youll do great on the SAT but i think a 2000+ and youve got a really good shot at brown and some of the others. Good luck in b-ball GO ROCKETS!!!

Thanks westhamunited23! I want the Rockets to push it to 7 games, but I know that the Lakers will win without a doubt. I called it at the beginning of the year: LeBron vs. Kobe finals. Ratings could be sky high with that matchup= more $. Anyway, thanks for the input and Go Cavs!!! ;)

Things are definitely looking good so far, but you really need to wait until your first semester of junior year is over. I also go to a a small rigorous private school and there were dozens of kids with 4.0s after sophomore year. Its really the first semester of junior year with all the AP classes and extracurriculars that separates you from the rest.

Yeah, that’s for sure, bsmdnechick23! Right now, I think that there are only three or four kids in my grade with 4.0s right now, and they’re taking a less rigorous schedule over the next two years. Thanks for the input!

you do not need to be here…braggart
