Counselor told me I would probably get in.
Agree?

… what do you mean by MIT honors?

Your stats certainly indicate capability - which applies to something like 80% of applicants.

MIT’s a long shot for anyone. You’re certainly in the running, but I think your counselor might not understand MIT admissions if she’s saying you’d probably get it.

i wouldn’t be so confident, for several reasons

lots of people are deferred or rejected with similar or better stats. i was deferred with similar academic stats, but they mean nothing if you don’t have interesting extracurriculars. i’m sure tons of MIT students played sports 4 years, were student body president, and have won musical awards. if you don’t seem genuinely interested in something, i don’t know that ECs are going to do anything for you. MIT-caliber ECs are like competing in national science fairs, that kind of stuff. not that you HAVE to do that, but compared to that kind of thing “student body president” doesn’t look all that great. and please don’t take this the wrong way.

summary: your academic stats are good, but unfortunately they don’t guarantee admission unless you have great ECs. which you didn’t really focus on in your post.

but then again, i don’t know any more than you do. this has just been my experience.

also, MIT honors?

^ ECs don’t have to be national competitions, but showing something beyond laundry-listing is important. You haven’t explained anything about your story, the teachers that know you, the types of essays you might write, etc. Remember that MIT Admissions is holistic. They’re interested in you the person, not a bunch of stats.

hmm… those stats would probably fit best at stanford columbia or princeton. perfect numbers are not mit’s focus. like those above me said, you would have a better chance if you had an engineering/science championship gold medal or a book published. doesnt matter where you go though; with those stats, you cant go wrong.

Edit: you lied about your grades and scores. nice.

Good letters.

What are my chances? Good, fair, poor? What do you think??

LOL

Just to clarify, MIT does not have an honors program, does not have valedictorians at graduation, gives only need-based scholarships (not academic nor athletic) and gives very little credit for legacies. These factors are all part of it’s unique character and environment. If you can gain admission on the merits, it’s fairly egalitarian after that. I’m sure someone from Admissions can correct me if my perceptions are inaccurate.

I did not lie about my stats. More than one person uses this account and they were posting their stats in that post.
