I graduated high school and entered a community college as a non-serious student. I did not do well my first semester and was put on academic probation. (I had a 1.9 GPA). A year as gone by and I have completely turned things around. I took four summer classes this summer also, and ended up doing well, 3 As and 1 B. Unfortunately, my GPA wasn't at my goal of a 3.0-3.2. It is a 2.86. I am hoping to transfer out of my CC in January. My main goal was Ohio State. I hear it is transfer friendly, and easier to transfer into than to apply right out of high school, but with out at least a 3.0 I am losing hope with that dream. Are there any other good schools out there that may accept me with my GPA? I am from NJ, and I am looking to leave my state, but any help would be wonderful. I am also hoping a good personal statement helps, and hopefully colleges will look at how I turned my grades around...

also, not that it matters but i could get some strong letters of rec from my employer…

I have the impression that OSU doesn’t ask for recs.

Have you investigated the regional campuses of OSU? OSU @ Lima, [College Search - Ohio State University: Lima Campus - Admission](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board),
states that the minimum GPA is a 2.0 and it accepted 113/118 applicants for the fall term. This acceptance rate may be lower for out of state students. There are also OSU campuses at Mansfied, Marion, and Newark. The down side to the regional campuses is that they have limited majors available.

there are many decent schools you could get into. No top schools, but schools such as western and eastern michigan would be options. schools of that level would be within your range IMO

If you cannot get into OSU now, why hurry? Stay in CC and build your GPA so you can go to OSU or somewhere else you really like and respect.

At your age you want immediate progress toward your goals. Yet at your age your best resource is time. When you are 30, it won’t matter whether you started OSU at 20 or 23 as long as you got the degree.

If you can get in now, then go for it! Go Buckeyes!

thanks for the help everyone. i guess a degree in 5 years in stead of 4 isn’t the worst thing in the world…

YESS!! Another tOSU app! Luckily for you I just got accepted into the school so I can help you out.

Basically in high school I graduated with a 3.2 GPA, and had horrible SAT scores (something like 960). I didn’t really try.

Well currently I live in California and have been going to JC for the past year. I got a 3.5 and completed 30 credits and got in no problem.

I’ve been talking to my cousin from Ohio who is transferring from instate and he got in with a 3.2.

Now tOSU is very friendly transfer wise, but remember they are very friendly to in-state transfers. While they are still super friendly to OOS, they have a lot of great transfer programs set up in-state so that is why they have such high acceptance rates.

Now if you would have reached your goal of a 3.0-3.2 then I would have said you have a decent chance so it is worth applying, but with a 2.86 you are on the edge. If you are a business major I say you have no chance.

They have a personal statement part in the application, ask to see future credits you may work on before attending tOSU, EC’s, and thats about it. They didnt ask for SAT scores, or a real essay.

Good luck man. I got in for Winter so hopefully I’ll see ya there, but if not then no worries there are a lot of great colleges out there.

Final Word: OSU is a reach school for you, but not impossible. Make sure to state in your personal statement that you plan to raise your GPA this Fall up to a 3.0 type range.

thanks a lot. i am actually not a business major. i am a communications major. i guess we will have to wait and see…if not, i will do well this semester and try to make it there next fall!

I honestly do not understand how people get a 2.86 in junior college…
You better have been effected by H1N1, SARS and Anthrax all at the same time to be able to explain that…

Good luck though
-Chowder out.

P.S. you will have no problem getting into lesser competitive four years.

lol Chowder out

Okay Ryan Seacrest.

There was no reason I have a 2.8 other than me not being mature and responsible my first year. I am paying for that now. But still, it doesn’t hurt to have a dream. If it’s OSU, then I will continue on my current path and hopefully my new found ambition will pay off. If not, I suppose everything will work out for the best. I hope that answers your question as to how people get a 2.86 in junior college…

I GOT IN!!! AHHH. wasn’t expecting it with my GPA. but yay! :)

Congrats kmlsu. You were accepted into Columbus or an OSU branch?
