Am I qualified to apply to these schools?

Here is where I want to apply: University of Virginia, Villanova, Boston College, Cornell, Richmond, and James Madison. Am I justified in applying to these schools? I really want to go to a great school but I don't want to see how many rejection letters I can get. For Villanova, Boston College, and Cornell I would be applying to the Business School. My GPA is great but SAT is uninspiring.

My brother goes to UVA and my dad is an alumni.

I think Cornell is probably a stretch (maybe BC and UVA as well) with your SAT scores. I might try retaking it if you think there’s any chance of improvement at all. Good luck with the ACT! And that isn’t to say that you don’t have a chance. What are you passionate about? Show admissions officers that.

Your sat is definitely your biggest obstacle. All I can say is take it again or try act before college apps.

I can only provide some insight on Richmond as my daughter is a Senior there. First - incredible school! Small classes, lots of one-on-one opportunities with professors. Good travel abroad opportunities.

Your grades, class rank, EC’s certainly put UR within reach. Your SAT is a little low but not a deal-breaker. A 31+ on your ACT will help. UR prides itself in its very holistic approach to admissions. I truly believe that your essay is the item that will set you apart from others with similar stats. My daughter was accepted ED and though she didn’t need to, she attended the accepted students event in the Spring of '10. She had a conversation with one of the admissions folks and she mentioned her essay on Tanzania. The admissions person remembered the essay and complimented her on it. I really believe the essay put her over the top.

Richmond and, I think, most schools don’t want to see a laundry list of ECs you have dabbled in. If you can show a level of devotion to a few that will go a long way.

The UR Jepson school of business is very highly regarded. There has been debate on the UR thread about the pros and cons of applying ED. My gut says it helped my daughter but I don’t know that for sure. At minimum, she had a relaxing Christmas knowing where she would be going to school in the fall. There are also good FA programs for VA residents.

If you want any personal insight on the school, PM me and I can put you in touch with my daughter and you can ask her anything about the school. She would be happy to help.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Got a 29 on my ACT which equates to a 1300 SAT!
