Am I Ready for Math 1a?

Does Math 1A require you to have extensive Calculus background at all? I've taken AP Calculus AB this year, but I feel like I'm still not strong in it yet (I understand derivatives/integrals quite well, it's just I'm still not as strong since I started out with a weak background in Pre-Calc since that course was taught horribly during my junior year).

I'm planning to apply for Haas and perhaps double major it with Computer Science. Though Haas allows 16a as a prequestie, Computer Science requires at least 1a+, so I'm not sure what to take yet. Do you think I'm prepared for 1a since I have mediocre AP Calculus AB background?

What do you all think? Many thanks!

Personally, since you’re not absolutely dead set on Haas, I would take Math 1A. It keeps your options open in case you’re not able to get into Haas or decide to change majors since Math 16A isn’t accepted for some majors.

Math 1A is designed to be a first calculus course for someone with no previous calculus, but with good knowledge of precalculus. (The fact that so many students in Math 1A are repeating AP Calculus may make the grading curve harder than one might expect, though.)

Math department recommendations:

Without AP Calculus (includes on-line precalculus placement test):
[Choosing the First Math Course at UC Berkeley - UC Berkeley Department of Mathematics](http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_1stcourse.html)

With AP Calculus:
[Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations - UC Berkeley Department of Mathematics](http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_AP.html)

College of Engineering recommendations (includes Math 1A and Math 1B sample final exams to check you calculus knowledge):
[Choosing an Appropriate First Math Course — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/new-students/choosing-an-appropriate-first-math-course.html)

If you find that your knowledge in Math 1A stuff is strong (based on the old final exams on the College of Engineering page), then take Math 1B followed by Math 54, which will work for both the CS and UGBA majors.

On the other hand, if those Math 1A final exams are a puzzle to you, take Math 1A, since CS does not accept Math 16A. If this is the case, and your precalculus knowledge is weak (based on the precalculus placement test), then take Math 32 before Math 1A.
