So I go to Emory University(Political Science) and applied to transfer to Cal and LA for fall session 2011. I declared my major as political science on my UC application. I have all my prereqs for the major done, and have an A in all my classes. I am also the Political Science Supplemental Instructor, RA...and all that good stuff. I am so confused right now with all these questions because I kinda changed my mind over winter break...

Recently I decided to change my career path from law school to journalism and so I declared the journalism minor at emory (didn't declare or even mention journalism or comm studies for UCLA or Berkeley)...Will it be possible that once I get into the poli sci major at the schools, I can possibly switch from poli sci to comm studies?

I know the academic information update on the website is for Jan 12. Should I declare the alternate major or even change my major to comm studies on Jan 12? The only problem with that is that I've pretty much declared my HUGE interest and love for politics and government in my personal statements, I just don't want them to think that I'm confused or fickle-minded.

And the saddest part is that...
I'm looking into a possible fashion concentration within journalism..I know I know, even my parents are really taken aback with the huge change of heart... politicalscience/law school to fashion journalism... A political science degree for fashion journalism sounds pointless...I don't know what to do. I just need some really good advice, my brain is a clutter mess of thoughts.

Thank you so much.

:(

First, you need to understand that if you are trying to transfer directly from Emory to UC Berkeley or UCLA your chances of acceptance are low despite your strong academic record. The California Master Plan for Higher Education requires that the UCs give admission priority to transfer applicants from California Community Colleges (CCCs), next would be transfers from other UCs and lowest admission priority goes to non-UC four year college transfer applicants. At least 90% of the transfer applicants accepted by UC Berkeley and UCLA are students from CCCs.

Second, at least at UCLA, Communications is the most severely impacted and most competitive major on campus. Changing your intended major to Communications will greatly reduce your already precarious chance of acceptance at a UC.

I think different UC campuses have different policies on changing majors by students who enter as transfers and for the most part it is very difficult. I realize this creates a dilemma for you since I am certain if you are accepted as a Political Science major you will not be allowed to change to Communications but if you amend your application to declare Communications as your intended major your chances of acceptance will be dismal.

If you are really serious about wanting to transfer to a UC your best course of action would be to withdraw from Emory now and start taking classes at a CCC this Spring and plan to transfer to a UC in Fall 2012.

just met a kid that goes to emory for film or something and he was repping it way too hard. called ucla a joke like 5 times. them’s fightin’ words!

ok that makes sense, thank you so much :0)
