Am I really missing out on the "complete unpaid internship experience"????

A fellow intern at orientation for a semester long unpaid internship in an important city looked at me with disgust as I mentioned that I am living in an apartment by myself across the street from the internship location.

He said that to get the complete unpaid internship experience, I should be rooming with 3 other people and sharing utilities.

Now I have heard stories of people losing a lot of weight during unpaid internships and barely scraping by, crammed into a small room with 3 or more people with sub-par utilities and appliances and having to travel an hour or more to get to the internship location while walking through dangerous neighborhoods and hazardous weather conditions.

Why should I feel bad that I can afford living in a gated community protected by armed guards and all the food that I want while living by myself?

I don't think I am missing out, do you?

I can’t tell if this is a joke, but there’s no shame in living in good digs if you can afford it. Cramming with other roomies is sometimes fun though (I emphasize the sometimes).
