Am I really NOT at a disadvantage if I apply undecided?

I am kind of interested in one major, but I am not completely sure that it is the one for me. Should I just apply undecided? BTW that major is within the college of arts and sciences. (ie. not in the business school or engineering school, etc.)

If colleges really don't factor in what major you apply for as long as it is to the same school, why do they even ask you?

Depends on the college. Some care about admittance based on major, some-many-most (?) do not.

IF you can already list a major, you MIGHT be in the running for some “early starts” such as a “direct admit” into the school/department…and/or even scholarships. My D is not COMPLETELY decided in her major (what pre-freshman is!?..ok, a FEW of you)…but she listed it and it’s made a difference because she’s already gotten a direct admit (which, at her school, allows you to begin taking courses toward your major as a freshman), AND a scholarship from the department.

But…it’s not really a DISADVANTAGE to declare undecided.

my problem is… I’m kind of interested in economics, but I’m scared that colleges will see that my math grades arent that good, and reject me because I want to do econ but my math grades arent up to par.

Would it be a safer bet for me to apply undecided?

One more piece of information that may be useful: I’m currently on track to getting an A for AP economics. If/when colleges review my mid-year transcript, will this be quite a boost for me if I were to apply for economics major?

Gosh, I don’t know. I’ll leave this up to someone with more info. Again, depends on the college (some do not even consider your major at all during admissions, so they won’t CARE that you want to be in economics, your math grade will stand on its own and help or hurt you overall). Also, at what TIER college are you looking. If you have lower math grades a top level school probably won’t consider you anyway, regardless of major. As for the Econ…that’s a required course. I’m sure many schools will ASSUME most students will be getting an A…even in AP…because so many kids take AP econ. But, again, that’s top tier schools.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge on this will weigh in so I’ll just bump for you.
