I was born and raised in California but my family moved to Florida two years ago (end of my 8th grade year). I’ve done 9th grade in FL and will do 10th as well. Family is considering moving back to CA and this would mean I would do 11th and 12th grade there and graduate there. Does this make me a resident for tuition purposes at UCs? I tried reading through their website about this but it was too confusing.
To be clear, family is considering moving back for reasons beyond obtaining UC instate tuition BUT having instate tuition to UCs is a factor in the decision
in general, yes. The rule stipulates that you (and your family) must be a resident fo CA for 365 days prior to the first day of UC class.
But isn’t UF a better value? It’s not only $15k/yr cheaper, they also offer many merit scholarships.

The most comprehensive CA resident policies are in the “ucop” document. Google that and the residence qualifications. It’s more than just living there. It’s how you show intent.
Can your family afford the move?
The price of housing continues to go up in California.
The cost of living is very high.
Are your parents moving the family for instate tuition purposes?
Any savings on tuition would be lost with the prices of housing.
Friends who have moved from California to Florida, and want to return, are finding that they have been priced out of California. With the pandemic, finding a job is very hard.
