Am I royally screwed?

So, I'm currently a Freshman - and I'm in the highest available leveled courses at my disposal, and I'm maintaining all A's. However, I am not in any Extra Curriculars, and the reason is I have mandatory obligations at home that keep me from doing anything after school.

As a tenth grader, I'll no longer have said obligation, and I'll be able to join EC's. I plan on joining Debate / Forensics, Arabic Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, and the Civil Rights Club.

If I excel in said clubs, for the next 3 years, will I be screwed on College Apps because I didn't stay with them for "4 years"? I talked to my Guidance Counselor and she said my current obligation counts as a job and I can put that down.

So, does it hurt you if you're in a club / sport for 3 years as opposed to 4?

I chuckled at this post. Don’t do join any clubs for the sake of joining and getting a leadership position. I personally despise these types of people. You know what, if you are doing clubs for the sake of having them on your college apps, I highly suggest that you rethink about your actions. You can not live life like this. Think of the club and the mission statement it goes by. Honestly think about it.

Eh, just put that you did it them in 9th grade. Won’t hurt.

Three years will be fine, given your current family obligations. On the Common App, there’s a “family obligations” activity category. List information there for 9th grade and colleges will know what happened.

Sort of like cheaters who look down on education?

Sort of like cheating?

haha. don’t lie on your app. you never know who will get audited!

@Davidthefat - I absolutely love History / Politics / Government, so Debate and Civil Rights Club are two that I’ve been wanting to do all year but couldn’t. As for Arabic Club, I’m Moroccan and it’s just a way for me to get more in touch with my culture and others who share it. GSA is really popular at my school, and it advocates Equal Rights for LGBT teens, which I fully support.

Earlier in the year, I was thinking that I’d join Chemistry Club, Key Club, Math Team, and all these other academic E.C’s for the sake of Colleges but I came to the conclusion that I’d find difficulty in sticking to clubs that lack my passion.

Bill, I have nothing to say to you. Life is not all about the mistakes a person makes in his lifetime. What matters in 30 years is what he has learned and how he used it.

You seem like a totally intelligent person. However, I find it very immature to judge a person by their mistakes. You are no perfect than I am.

^Yeah, you are undoubtedly no perfect.

I simply find it odd that you would despise someone for joining clubs for college, yet you expressed no remorse at cheating, claiming it was justified because you care about more important things and think the educational system isn’t good enough for you to be expected not to cheat.

You shouldn’t be so judgmental while in such a position. It would have been better for you to simply advise, rather than criticize.

I’m new to C.C. so I haven’t been on many threads but it seems as though people are going off on tangents.

I see my post as an advice, not a criticism. I am only in 2 school related activities: Football and Robotics. Everyone makes mistakes; my mistake only lasted 30 seconds. Now joining a club is a long time commitment. It really takes lots of thought before joining. My mistake was from the LACK of thinking. I am merely saying: think before making any long term commitments. It can come back and bite you in the butt.

edit: I see nothing private about Youtube; it is used by billions of users world wide everyday.

You said that you despised me without knowing anything about me except for the mere fact that I want to join the Arabic Club, so I don’t see how constructive the advice is in that.

@(>.<)@

Read my post one more time; where did I ever refer to you joining Arabic club? Did I say “I hate you for…”? No. Now you see, I have seen plenty of these types of people in my life. I am just giving you a warning.

Most of my Ecs will be 11-12. Don’t worry.

Tell that to the mods - they always delete Youtube links. For example, see Chedva’s edit in the OP here -> http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1101027-high-school-protest-students-want-voice.html</a></p>

You “despise” (which I don’t actually understand) people (including me, according to you) who join clubs to look good for colleges. Don’t try and pass that off as decent advice. What do I need to be “warned” about, exactly?

^^^^^it’s not a private website- it’s youtube.

You need to be warned about joining too much and not caring about enough of them. That is what you need to be warned about. I do by “Do one thing and do that one thing great”. I never said I despise you, you have yet to join all those; you just plan on joining.

So in other words: be yourself, not what you think society wants you to be.
