I posted this also in the high school forum but decided to move it because this was more relevant
So basically I'm a high school sophomore who had a really bad gpa last year (3.199) although i took all honors. It seems as though i will only get at most a 3.6-3.8 but im expecting more of a 3.4-3.5. I dont know what i can do at this point, I took easier classes (math and english) to buffer my AP World grade, yet i only have a C+ (Weighted B+) in that class.
I also have completed A LOT of hours for community service, have a leadership position at a club, swim team, and im in multiple clubs on campus in which i am pretty much involved in. However, I heard EC's dont matter anymore... and my class rank (based on my freshman score) is pretty crappy.Am I screwed for a chance at a good college? (UC's, and whattheheck Ivies?) What can I do so I DO NOT GO TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE and/or some of the CSU's (Nothing against the CSU's, just dont want to go to the crappy ones) and generally not get into a crappy school

First, stop taking easy classes. The top colleges will expect the hardest classes. Next, focus on doing your best and earning good scores ans several UCs should be in reach.

ECs are fun, can be rewarding and occasionally can make a difference in college applications. They also can leave a student with too little time to devote to their school work. Are you spreading yourself too thin? Would you do better if you had fewer ECs?

How would you do if you took honors and no AP classes? Most colleges look primarily at GPA and SAT/ACT and recommendations. Many high schools including my kid’s public high school (located in an IVY league university town) don’t let freshman or sophomores take AP classes. In my opinion, it looks better to get an A in honors than a B or lower in an AP class.

FIRSTLY I think that you need to stop calling universities ‘crappy’ as you so eloquently put it. It’s not OK to insult any university. Spielberg was rejected numerous times from USC (a ‘good college’) and graduated from CSU - Long Beach. So calm down. If you do die penniless on the street it’s not because of where you graduated from.

With those grades you have a 5% chance at best of getting into an Ivy unless you get a recommendation from Obama. And if you want to get into a UC, stop spending your time on CC and spend more time studying.

I apologize if what i said (eg crappy) offended you, You’re right, I really shouldn’t put universities down, i 'm just super worried about this and put that together with being a (slightly…lol) immature 15 year old produces not so eloquent words… I’m sorry again, and thank you for your constructive criticism
