Am I screwed? UVA

Hi everyone. So, following the worst year of my life, aka junior year, I will be finishing with a 4.2 gpa for the year, and a 4.0 overall GPA for high school going into senior year. My DREAM school is UVA, and I am an instate candidate. However, I was looking at some data charts and talking to my counselor, and the average GPA that gets in from our school (public school in FCPS) is a 4.2. My GPA, being .2 lower than the average, is worrying me.

30 ACT

So, with that being said, will my extracurriculars make up for it?

So. I know UVA is extremely competitive from northern virginia, and with my grades being so low, should I even apply? Should I apply early? Should I wait to apply regular so I can submit my hopefully better senior first semester grades? Will it be harder if I apply regular?

I would appreciate any insight / adivce.

Thank you very much. God Bless

If you can afford UVA, do NOT hesitate to apply early. Your chances are better early than in the regular pool. Since your GPA is a bit lower than your school’s average, I would focus on the ACT and try to bring that up at least 3 points, since your GPA won’t change that much. You can also try the SAT.

Thank you for the advice. Anyone else?

Ahhh come on I know somebody out there has some more insight!!! please and thank you!!!

I’m willing to chance anyone back! Sorry to seem like a pest! thank you

You seem to be about in the middle of their applicant acceptance. Your ECs aren’t bad but I would push for leadership positions this year to stand out, as many UVA applicants have comparable ECs. You’re chances might be a slight bit lower if you’re looking into the Woodrow Wilson School of Government as from what I was told by a UVA rep is that it is the most applied to school at the university.

Would I be better off applying to a school that has less applicants, and switching once I get once/ if I get into the college?

I think you have a pretty solid chance. I don’t know much about UVA, but after some preliminary research it looks similar to familiar-to-me UT Austin–only much smaller. Because of this, I would try to stand out in ways other applicants probably won’t. Grades are great, but if they aren’t your strong point, look at some other things to polish. We both have only a limited amount of time left, so brush up on things that can be improved quickly. Like the other posters said, stand out with some leadership positions or unique or special qualities.

I would apply early if you are this passionate about the school! You and UVA seem to be in a similar position as me and Rice. Pretty much in the middle of the applicant pool, so apply early!! I did some math a while back for Rice and my chances of admission with early decision are 10 percent greater than regular admission. I’m sure it’s similar with UVA–although I notice they do not have early decision, only early action. Still, applying before everyone else shows a special interest in the school and definitely something that will make you stand out from the crowd.

Thanks for chancing me again.

I think you are fine. All you need to do is look at your school’ s Naviance and see where you stand. Looking at your grades and ACT, I think you are competetive. Botomline is with that GPA why don’t you improve your ACT or take SAT 1 and try for top 10 schools.
