This is a "will I make it" question.

These are all unweighted:
Freshman year- 3.3 GPA 1st semester, 3.6 GPA 2nd semester
Sophomore- 3.5 GPA 1st, 3.8 GPA 2nd (took 1 accelerated class)
Junior- 3.5 GPA 1st (2 AP classes)

cumulative GPA- 3.66, unweighted GPA- 3.59, UC GPA-3.67

SAT score- 1790

I'm treasurer of Ecology Club (member since 9th grade), in JV swim (since this year), member of CSF (since 10th grade), International Club (this year), Helping Hands Club (this year), Yearbook staff (this year), volunteer at the library (92 hours during summer)

I plan to major in Environmental Studies. Well, any major of that nature since I'm still undecided about the specifics.

If I did really well this semester, would it prove to colleges that I've been trying harder? My GPA is pretty low because I have gotten B's and a couple C's ONLY in math and B's in advanced classes. :'(

Get your SAT score up. They don’t care about your freshman year. I got in with a 3.67 UC GPA/3.9 fully weighted and a 2130, but I’m considered one of the luckier fellows. It’s going to be harder for your year so aim higher than me.

Really bring up that SAT score. Take subjects! Especially if you’re doing anything science/math related for your major! Gpa… I got in with a 3.75 UC GPA with 3.97 fully weighted & 2090 on my SAT, 800 on both my Subjects (math iic, physics). I also applied for the environmental program and I had good background with my community service at a local preservative center with over 150 hours.

If you’re really interested in going into the environmental program, I suggest you look into UC Davis for sure and UCSB. UCI isn’t really known for their environmental program… I think it’s really new to UCI, while UCSB has 50 years of funding and teaching and UC Davis’ been doing it since 1909, over 100 years in that field so it is well funded and lots of hands on. This goes for anything “nature” wise majors. UCSC is also known for its program and it’s a bit easier to get in. But I can’t predict how the admissions will be next year… this year was brutal and until around 2015 it’s not going to improve…

I got in with a 3.68 UC GPA (weighted…) but a 2100 on my SAT, 790, 750, and 710 on subjects (for Chinese, Math iic, Chem) so if you bring up your SAT score that will really boost your chances. I didn’t have that many ECs, but 100+ community service hours. Colleges do like to see improvement, so bring up your grades and that’s definitely a good sign. Even though subject tests aren’t required anymore, I think it would be beneficial for you.

I was lucky. I got in with a 3.6 uc gpa and a 29 ACT (which equals around 1900 SAT). Even my SAT subject scores ranged from average to just plain horrible. But its better safe than sorry so work on that SAT score. Don’t slack off and keep working hard. Good luck!

Haha I had the opposite problem. I had a 4.3 UC GPA but a 24 on the ACT, which is equivalent to a 1680 on the SAT… talk about horrible

Thanks everyone! Also, do UC schools take the highest SAT score in one sitting? Or just the highest sections, regardless of the testing date? (if that made any sense)

@deadlyjuicebox: it has to be from one sitting
meaning if you got : math-700 reading-600 writing-600 - 1900
but also got : math-600 reading-700 writing-600 - 1900
your highest SAT would be 1900 and not 2000

( but if you are considering a CSU, they take the highest score from multiple sittings)

Take the ACT. It’s not advice, I force you to.
