Am I screwed??

I keep on worrying about my Freshman grades and how UCLA will consider them. I understand that they're not put into the GPA, but the adcom forms an opinion about you and thus sees if you are qualified for a certain UC, and grade 9 (freshman year) seems to be a factor... I did very poorly freshman year getting about an 82 average, but gr 10 and 11 I skyrocketed to 96-97, got 99 and 100 in some certain subjects and won math competitions, stuff like that...

Will the freshman year hold me back? If so, just how much?

Don’t stress it. You did fine freshman year and did great 10th and 11th. The UC’s don’t factor in freshman grades for a reason. Just put together your best application. Write a great essay. UCLA is a competitive school and we know “perfect” kids that got denied and not “perfect” but darn interesting kids get in. Make sure you find some other UC’s and CSU’s to apply to as well. If you are a CA resident you are fortunate to have so many options!
