Am I screwed?

I am currently a sophomore and I ended freshman year with a 3.5 weighted GPA (5.0 Scale) which is not too happy about. I haven’t really taken any SAT’s yet except the bio subject which I got a 790 on. My other EC’s include about 150 or so community service hours, vice president of the robotics club, MUN 2 years, FBLA 2 years, Pre-Med 1 year and I’m about to start volunteering more at a hospital nearby. I know it’s too early to tell, but all my friends have 4.0+ GPA’s and I’m just concerned as to whether I’ll be crushed when it comes application time. I’m also probably going to finish high school with 12 or 13 AP courses. Thank you for taking the time to actually read this post.

Focus hard on your grades. Sounds like you may test well, but nothing makes up for bad grades. You don’t need 12-13 APs. Better to take APs in the areas you are strongest in and have the most interest in and do well in them. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing.

What colleges you interested in?

You’re all right! Lots of schools have an unofficial “freshman forgiveness” policy where they don’t pay too much mind to your freshman year grades. Personally, I bombed freshman year and got a GPA probably worse than that–but I worked up via lots of clubs and extracurriculars, straight A’s sophomore and junior year, and now I’m looking at the ivies. Don’t sweat about these freshman grades–in fact, you’re at a bit of an advantage as you can display some exponential growth by knocking it out of the park this year. Good luck!

Please, for the love of all that is good, do not stress about college now. You’re a sophomore. Keep working hard but more importantly have fun!
