I'm a Junior so I know I'm thinking alittle too far ahead, but I wanted to check out my chances. I'm a Caucasian Female residing in New York. My hooks will be first-gen college and low income household with a single parent. I haven't taken any honors/AP however this year I am self studying for the AP Psych and AP U.S. History exam and I'm expecting a 4 or 5. I haven't taken the SAT yet, but I'm expecting in the 1750ish range. I have an upward grade trend and I have around a 3.5 GPA. I am MVP and captain of the Varsity track team which is rare for a junior in my school. I don't have any volunteering yet but plenty of work experience. Can you chance me on the following schools :

Virginia Tech (I know this is probably completely out of my range, but possibly applying ED)
University of Rhode Island
Fordham University
University of Colorado- Boulder
University of Vermont
Elon University (again out of my range, but I constantly get emails/mail)
University of Tennessee
Coastal Carolina
UMass Amherst

Virginia Tech: Target
University of Rhode Island: Target
Fordham University: Low Reach
University of Colorado- Boulder: Low reach
University of Vermont: Low reach
Elon University: Low reach

Coastal Carolina: Safety
UMass Amherst: Target

Self-studied APs help, but if you’re expecting a 1750 on the SAT, it makes me wonder if you’ll really get that high of a score on the AP tests. They’re hard, is what I’m saying. Why not study for the SAT as well? You have an entire year, including the summer, and there’s some great material out there for this crap (I use Princeton Review materials, and they’d probably be good study guides for those AP tests).

Anyhoot, enroll in some Honors or even AP courses next year, and get some volunteer hours in over the summer. They don’t care when you did them, or even what you did, just so long as you have them (unless you think that your work experience will be just fine).

You still have a year. Do all that stuff, and you should be fine for all of those schools.

sorry i only know about two schools on your list i have heard of the others but i don’t know much about them

Fordham university is hard to get into and they expect honors/AP classes throughout high school with a high GPA preferably 3.6 or higher with a high SAT score preferably 1700 +.
Even though you made a list now you have to consider cost i heard there financial package is not much which means you might need to get some scholarships and loans also, there acceptance rate is not so high i think somewhere around 40%

Amherst is the second one i know since I am from MA. There financial aid package is decent but since you are an out of state applicant i don’t really know. Around 300 students from my high school got accepted over the 4 years and average GPA 3.5 with average SAT 1620. i got scholarship there full tuition for 4 years.

Virginia Tech 35%
University of Rhode Island 45%
Fordham University 30%
University of Colorado- Boulder 50%
University of Vermont 70%
Elon University 45%
University of Tennessee 45%
Coastal Carolina ??
UMass Amherst 30%

Your sound fine, just try and improve your grade and work on studying for the SAT+ACT and I think you’ll be set :)

Thanks so much! I’ve done a couple of practice ACTs and I’ve gotten 28s an 29s. Can anyone else chime in? I’m really interested in my chance for Virginia Tech.

If you can seriously drop your times this year (by like 20-25 seconds in the 800 or by 11-12 seconds in the 400) then you might get some pull for track, but otherwise I doubt it. Make sure to study for the SAT’s, and I agree with the other posters.
