I am a freshman in college and I have always wanted to go into a medical or dental specialty. I am a division-one student athlete, and I am majoring in biomedical engineering at the moment. I have some shadowing hours from summers, but with so much practice and traveling for my sport, I feel it will be hard to find a lot of time to shadow, volunteer, and do research. I was not exceptionally smart in high school. I got a 28 on the ACT and had a 3.7 GPA. I was just wondering if aiming for medical school is a long shot? Thanks!
If you work hard in College, you should be able to get in.
Take some of the core science classes needed for medical school admissions and see what grades you get before making any decisions.
I’m a year 10 In highschool and I always stress and think I’m not smart enough for anything and I have a scholarship…what happens if you dont meet the qualifications of the university you want to go to?
I am concerned about the demands for your time between division 1 sports versus premed classes. The premed students that I have known have been VERY dedicated to their studies. You might need to decide between the sport versus maximizing your chances for medical school.
Most students who start as freshmen in premed don’t end up at medical school, even without a sport. It is a lot of work to get from here to there so you have to want to do it.
Can you look into other health professions?
Another solution is to choose a major you like, take non science pre-reqs (strongly recommended/required: psychology, sociology, a diversity focused class, bioethics) now, spread the science classes as much as you can and use your 5th year. You could also switch to nursing, you’d work in a health profession after graduation, but of course that’s only possible if your college has a pathway to this (oftenw it’s not possible).
It’s going to be very very hard for you to do your sport alongside the work required by pre-med classes AND adding all the activities needed on top of it (volunteering, shadowing…). I don’t think it’s doable since days only have 24hours…
