Okay, I am an incoming freshman, and I basically have a plan for when I am going to take the SAT, ACT, PSAT, and SAT II. I need some of your insight or advice. I plan on taking the SAT II Biology test after I finish the course in 9th grade, but should I wait until I finish AP Biology (in 12th/11th grade) instead? The same goes for the SAT II Chemistry; should I take it at the end of my 10th grade year, or wait until I finish AP Chemistry? I really don't want to wait until I take the AP classes because I am afraid that I will only be able to take the classes in my senior year, and by then, I probably won't be able to send my scores to the colleges. Help me with this deliemma, please! Thank you in advance.

You can still send them to colleges if you take them in June after eleventh grade.

Depends on how deep your bio course is and how good your teacher is.

My fellow rising sophomores took the Biology tests, E and M, and informed me that it was quite difficult due to the incompetence of our teacher.

You can retake the test after the AP class if you don’t do well the first time, but it’s definitely possible to do well on bio if you studied a lot/had a good teacher. My friend got an 800 in 9th grade and most of my classmates did pretty well.

Depends. Is it an honors level class? If so, most of the things covered should be sufficient for the test However, you may want to ask how students fared taking the subject test that have previously taken it directly or ask your future bio or chemistry teachers. I have had students do very well after the Honors level course, and others who thought taking the AP level gave them a better foundation

Do the practice questions on the College Board website after finishing 9th grade biology. If you feel ready, take the test. Keep in mind that if you wait to take AP bio until senior year, it’ll be too late to take the subject test.

Having taken SAT chem and looked at the bio e&m tests, I figured to get a good score on both, you should probably consider taking the respective AP course. I know that if I had taken SAT chem before AP chem, I would’ve failed (AP helped me get 800).

I was going to take Bio E, but I decided not to last minute. Probably should have taken it anyway.

On that note, how does score choice work? Do some colleges require all scores to be sent? (Sorry for hi-jacking)

@youknoweeeeeeeee It depends on your class. I know for a fact that my honors bio class in 9th grade would have left me ill-equipped to take the subject test.
If you self-study it, you might do okay. Just don’t expect to learn everything from the class.
@Yakisoba Depends on the school. Some (like Yale) require all scores to be sent. Others allow you to choose which scores you want to send.
