We have a lot of people applying to Wellesley (~30 each year) and a 65% acceptance rate for Early Decision. I am applying ED and am desperately wondering if I can make the cut.

Regarding academics, I definitely feel that I struggle in classes since my grades are mediocre, but it's a pretty hard school :(. I failed Honors Precalculus in 11th grade and got a C in AP Chemistry. Will this affect me severely? x_x. I was also on medical leave for half of junior year but really don't want to talk about it in my application anywhere...

Also, I'm hard-of-hearing (80% hearing loss). Hopefully this will help? I mean I feel that my ECs, while not spectacular compared to others, are reasonable competitive. Couple that with being hard of hearing (especially in debate) then it's really something that I've had to face - being in a mainstream lifestyle even if I feel that my hearing didn't impact me that much.

Please let me know if I am being realistic. I feel that I can get into Wellesley ED but am worried that I am being too confident, mostly because of Naviance statistics.

I’m a current student at Wellesley College, and I do think that you will do fine. I think the GPA average on Naviance is a little low, but your SAT’s more than make up for any problems you have with that, and ED should help a lot.

A few suggestions though. It may feel weird to talk about your medical leave junior year, but if it had any influence on your lackluster grades then you have to, and if you do, it will most likely help you. Bad grades themselves are only a bad thing when you ignore them, because then admissions officers think you’re trying to hide them, but if you’re open about them, it can actually help you.

Another thing has nothing to do with you, but my class, the class of 2014, had a lot more students than usual enroll. I’m not too sure if this will affect acceptance rates in the future, but it might.

So overall, I think you’re going to do fine. Write an awesome essay to top it off, and you’ll have a great application.

Yeah, I am so relieved that the average GPA acceptance is low because I struggle to even get mediocre grades here!

Thank you for the advice and feedback; I appreciate it!

I completely forgot about this thread.

If anybody wanted an update, I was rejected from Wellesley College. I don’t think they were fond of my two C-'s. However, I’m okay with it (after some crying since I really wanted to come here… haha!). Congratulations to everyone who was accepted; I’m sure you will excel and even if you didn’t get in, you’ll succeed elsewhere!

I think the reason for why I was accepted probably lies in my low GPA. Judging from my application result, I give this advice to future applicants: do well in school. It matters more than you think; you can’t “compensate” for it with extracurriculars or an essay.

Another note: I didn’t have an Interview. I felt too awkward getting one since I would struggle to understand the interviewer :x.
