I am a DA to Kelley and I held off on submitting the housing application until now (4/25) because I wasn’t completely sure I was attending IU until now.
I am very interested in living in the Kelley LLC and listed it as my top preference on the housing app, but I have no idea how difficult it is to be selected to live there or if the date I submitted the app is going to hurt my chances. I believe my essay responses on the housing app were very good FWIW.
I have a KLLC alum son and a current DA Kelley student who lived in the KLLC this year until she evacuated due to the mold crisis in the dorms. Next year the KLLC will be located in Eigenmann Hall instead of the 3 McNutt residences it has been in for years. The Application typically asked for 3 specific essays, so forget about using one you already wrote. You do not have to be a Kelley DA or even a business major to be accepted to the KLLC. However, the applicant pool is typically competitive and I believe we were told last year, if you are accepted to notify them that you wish to accept because there is a wait list after acceptances go out. If you pre-select your roomie, unless you both get into the KLLC, you will have to choose the KLLC and forgo the roomie or choose the roomie and forgo the KLLC. Also know that there are KLLC seminars, programming and requirements you will need to fulfill throughout each semester to maintain your KLLC status. Plus there is an additional thematic housing fee charged to your bursar each semester.
Setting aside the relocation of the Kelley LLC due to the dorm renovation, the LLC was a fabulous experience for my son this past year. He met a great group of students who were both good students and good guys. They supported each other academically and they hung together socially. While the actual number of overall students in the LLC is a large number, he was in a section of all freshmen. I highly recommend it as it helped him with the transition to college especially socially. If you decide not to do the Kelley LLC (or don’t get in), seriously consider signing up for Camp Kelley if it is still offered.
IU parent or IUB accounting did you feel like the size of Kelley was a particular challenge in terms of resources, internships, placement etc…I like Kelley a lot and plan to apply but am a little concerned about the size etc, it seems like you need to get into one of the workshops to ensure good internships and placements…feedback welcome!
@DG I didn’t think size was an issue. Kelley has a really good career services office and it’s pretty easy to get an appointment whenever you need it. I was able to personally contact an advisor when I needed help negotiating and deciding on job offers.
Being in a workshop definitely helps if there is a workshop for the field you want to go into, but they don’t have workshops for everything. If you want to do accounting, for example, none of the workshops relate to it and wouldn’t help you at all. I was able to recruit with all of the biggest accounting firms, and I think they respect Kelley a lot.
My son just finished his freshman year so really isn’t quite yet at that stage. Kelley has lots of resources but you have to be proactive and seek them out - for instance, dropping in on the advisor or making the appointment. I know our son sought feedback from his LLC instructor about a proposed course schedule to see what he thought about it (professors, sections, etc.) and what made sense. He knew him through the required LLC course. If I could wave my magic wand and have a do-over, it would be to take finite math locally and only transfer the credit. It was a thoroughly miserable experience universally dreaded at IU. He tested out of Calc fortunately with his AP score.
@DG - Navigating IU will take some effort on a student’s part. Try to take advantage of any opportunity offered to you. As a freshman my son was invited to apply to a consulting opportunity (he did not even know what consulting was at this point), he applied, was accepted and he loved it. He then declared this as his major and started getting involved in some consulting groups. After sophomore year he had a great internship (start going to all of the job fairs even as a freshman) and he then applied and was accepted to the consulting workshop. This summer he has an internship with an actual consulting firm. Best of luck in your decision making!
