Am I totally screwed?(Admission rescindment)

I applied in September for the summer session at Florida State University and was accepted in October.

The problem is that over the summer I developed a bad drug habit which destroyed my first semester grades. I went from a 4.0 junior year to a 1.9 first semester senior year (3 D’s, 3 C’s… AP weighting saved my GPA)

My grades second semester are improved; I should end up with the following:

AP Comp Sci: C
Dividends: A
Pre Calc: B
AP Lang: B
Economics Honors: B
AP Biology: C

I’m going to write a letter to the director of admissions explaining my situation, along with a letter from an AP teacher and guidance counselor stating that I’ve improved significantly during the second semester.

Do you think I should be honest about the situation? I don’t want to scare them away…

I’m hoping they’ll let me come summer session on academic probation :(

What do you guys think?

I think you'll be fine as long as you're up front...but you will probably be on strict academic probation.

They might also want a note from a teacher or counselor saying that you're drug-free as well though.

call admissions anonymously and ask

Do you live in the area? I would think a face-to-face meeting would be better. I hope you got some professional help for your addiction.

I don't know if you need to explain. It's possible FSU will only care about your final grades. Anonymously call them and ask. I don't know if it's wise to let them know about your drug problem.

I agree with Northstarmom. If this had happened with my kids, I'm not sure I'd volunteer any details about your experience with drugs. It's likely that sharing that kind of information would cause you more trouble than your grades. I also believe that FSU will look at the year in total. Perhaps you can simply state, if asked, that you had some personal troubles in your 1st semester that have since been resolved.

It can't hurt to have supporting letters to send in, but I'd suggest they not specifically mention the drugs, unless you are explicitly asked. (I'm guessing this question was asked on your original application, before all this happened.)
