I also am a Biology major right now so would like to stay in that but if you have any suggestions for a close major that would be easier please let me know and I am planning on going into medicine. Thank you for you help i appreciate it.
Thanks,
from a girl who really just wants to get into a college of her dreams

…have you ever thought of going to a ccc? it really would make your transition easier (course-wise atleast) because of the whole articulation thing we’ve got going on. (assist.org)

You’re predicting a high GPA with pretty difficult courses but if all goes well I don’t see why you won’t be granted admission to at least a mid tier UC. Biology is impacted and extremely competitive at almost all UC’s especially UCB and UCLA so with that said in mind, I don’t see them granting you admission with a 3.80 GPA from an out of state school.

I don’t think that you can claim to be a California resident living in Oregon but there might be some loop hole or something you can use (preference is given to California community college transfers).

PS. If you’re dream school is UCLA or UCB, you either should get no less than a 4.0ish GPA or change majors. If you’re going into the medical field, biology is a good major.

would going to a cc in my sophomore year allow me to transfer after a year at a cc? or would I have to wait another 2 years to transfer?

Yea well I am a California resident because I have lived in San Diego my whole life. My parents live there and just going to school in Oregon doesn’t make you a resident so I am still a resident of California

Agreed with redo. If you want to take the easier path, leave U of O and begin taking classes at a California community college.

Umm. That should be okay (assuming that all your classes are transferable). I know many of one year transfers to a UC.

one years??? how would you go about that?

I meant one year transfers from a community college to a UC. But they have either a lot of AP classes, started taking classes at a CC in high school, transferred from CSU to a CC to a UC within two years, etc.

What I’m trying to say is this: talk to a UC rep and ask them if your courses transfer successfully into a UC (do the same for a CC). If all is well, do one year at Oregon and one year at a CC and then transfer. Make sense or did I lose you somewhere?

If I were you this is what I’d do… Finish up your last semester (current one) where you are in Oregon. Starting in the summer move back to California and finish taking your classes at a CCC. BUT since you are currently at a University, make CERTAIN you do not go over the credit limit which I think is 80 semester units. That will definitely be the way to go. Also, do not take English II in Oregon, it would be a waste of time. That’s because English II in California is a critical thinking course; most of the out of state schools will not be equivalent to that course. You will be fine with transferring with a TAG (look that up) for applying next year… just make sure you finish 30 credits by the end of this summer. So I would recommend taking English II at a CCC this summer along with making certain you finish up your math requirements. If you really want to get into UCLA or UCB get into a TAP program… but you’d probably need to start on that also in the summer at the latest.

But since she’s probably going to live in SD, she can only TAP into UCLA not Berkeley. But yes Melissa pretty much nailed it.

okay you kinda lost me in there a little l.mendoza but I understand kinda. I got a 3.3 this last fall quarter, which is not okay with me so my next quarter gpa will be much much higher. Its a bummer that I will have to go to a cc but if it gets me into UCB which is my dream dream dream school I will do it. Where do I find these reps to talk to? or contact?

I dont even know what TAP means but if i can do it to UCLA that is fine with me. And i could do all this and me admitted to the UC by 2012?

Don’t talk to a counselor. The MAJORITY of them will give you wrong advice and do not know what they are talking about. You are going to need to do the research yourself. I’m uncertain of the geographical location with being qualified for certain TAP programs. From what I understand UCLA is the only school that really has a TAP program… it’s basically an honors program and it’s completed by finishing “I think” about 6 classes. UCB doesn’t really have a TAP program, but if you keep your GPA high >3.8, finish ALL of the prereq, do honors classes, chances are you will make it in. If you know what community college you will go to when you go back to CA I would apply now, and if it’s not too late, TRY to get into ANY online class that you can. That way for the summer semester you will have priority registration, because classes fill up really quickly… it won’t matter that you are in Oregon, because the class will be online. Maybe try for English II to make sure you have that out of the way. SO… Do your own research, because counselors will give you wrong/bad advice!

Melissa is pretty much right, except seek out a counselor to get their opinion, not all of them are bad.

I very strongly agree that you do your own research, this forum is an invaluable resource which you should use as much as possible. People on here have more knowledge in regards to transferring and protocols than counselors do.

Thats what I figured and I know this forum in great just there is not many resources for kids that are trying to get out of a 4 year university and go to a UC so all of this is great the more help I get the better I will be and you dont understand how greatful I am for your guys help. I would love to be at UCB by 2012

As far as I understand it, norcal CC’s can do a TAP for Berkeley and socal CC’s can do a TAP for UCLA. I’m not too sure where I heard this from but I’m sure if you look it up, you’ll find it.

So if I went to a cc in norcal and started going there this fall after going to UCSD for a summer session and maybe taking English II at a cc online would I be able to TAP Berkeley and get in fall 2012?

Whoa you people get way ahead of yourselves. Schemes and dreams do not trump state law, the California education code or Title V. First off Oregon is a completely different Republic (not only State) from California. There are differences in legalese between domicile and residency nevermind tax codes and a municipal corporation (i.e. college) contracts which is essential what you are partaking in when are PROPERTY of an institution.

If you are sincerely not happy (id say with your education more so over Eugene) you need to get the hell out of Oregon ASAP or stick it through (granting you haven’t been there too long and hopefully not over 4-6 months). Under Title V there are rules on where you first start which will affect a student. I registered for a class at PSU (which i worked at luckily) years ago but luckily met a top law student that i became friends with. I registered for a class but luckily withdrew. That alone would have affected me here in California. I was lucky since on the fed records just says Oregon – December - December of the same year.

Word to the wise for the young and still hopefully innocent: FOR THOSE THAT DON’T KNOW THE LAWS IN AND OF CALIFORNIA WILL BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF SINCE THERE IS NO ARGUMENT FROM IGNORANCE AND THAT IS THE WAY THE SYSTEM WORKS SO EMPOWER YOURSELVES INSTEAD OF BEING THE NEXT VICTIM. Do NOT go on hearsay, do NOT listen to counselors, and do NOT listen to wishful thinking. Get dozens of opinions from departments up and down an institution and utilize legal aid at your institution and/or look up the proper code and section yourself if have to.

I’m confused, I am not a Oregon resident I will not have Oregon residency. I will still be a resident of California. Lived there my whole life and gone to University of Oregon for my freshman year

Imart10… how old are you? Are you under the age of 24? Where do your parents live? If you are under the age of 24, and not married, then your residency will be determined by your parents residence. If they are not, you may still qualify. If you spent 3 years at a California High School and graduated then you will be exempt from out of state regardless of where your parents currently live.

I just turned 18 in December my parents live in San Diego California and I graduated and went to high school in San Diego California.

So I am guessing it ould be like really really really hard to get into UCB or UCLA or UCSD transferring from UO after 2 years. But I would be able to transfer after a year at a ccc starting in 2011?
