Hey Guys,
I am a USC Marshall Internal Transfer student – AMA if you have any questions

I would be an incoming sophomore this fall. The only reason I would be considered an internal transfer is because business calculus is full. I would have to take it this summer or fall of 2015, then apply for internal transfer for spring 16. Just wondering the process. My gpa is 3.6, honors. I just don’t wanna change my major for 1 class so just wondering the process? Does usc consider a certain amount if internal transfer, university transfers, and community college transfers each year and if so which are considered priority?
To keep it short and sweet – the minimum internal GPA transfer is 3.5 – meaning you need to get a 3.5 GPA or better your first semester. It is important to note that an A- is a 3.7 NOT a 4.0. I was VERY competitive because I earned a 3.925 (3 A’s, 1 A-). The internal transfer process is STRICTLY based on GPA – in the application they do not ask about extra curricular activities. You will meet with a counselor who will tell ALL the students the same thing – take 2 GE’s and take 2 Marshall Classes – specifically BUAD 310 (statistics) and ECON 351 (microeconomics) – the 2 GE’s are up to your discretion. Obviously performing better in 310 and 351 will have more is significance than performance in your GE’s. BOTTOM LINE: If you get in, you will be taking BUAD 310 and ECON 351 plus 2 GE’s, to be competitive you need a 3.7+ (that is all A-), extra curricular activities do not matter. Simply put, if you get a 3.85 (2 a’s, 2 a-) you should be a lock. Anything less and you become 60% chance – any thing more and it goes from 80% to me 100%
Internal transfer is tricky – you NEED to do well – no question and I spent EVERYDAY studying all day – hardly any days off – therefore you NEED to be aware of how much WORK it is – not necessarily how HARD but how much WORK – because USC is NOT HARD – it it just requires alot of TIME and WORK – not smarts
I’m so happy you decided to do this AMA!
I started on the communications track at my CC, but I recently decided I want to go into accounting/finance. I’ve always known I wanted to apply to USC, so I took GEs, FL’s, diversity req, etc. however I haven’t taken calc (due to being on communications track, and its also SUPER difficult to get into a calc class at my CC). So I’m guessing I would have to take calc in addition to the 2 GE’s and 2 marshall classes then?
Also, should I apply as an econ major for Fall 2015? I was thinking of applying as political science since it might be easier to get in considering I’ve only taken micro econ, statistics, and college algebra. I guess it doesnt matter though, I could always put econ as my first choice then poli sci as my third, right?
Anyways, thanks for answering!
Hey there – I will address some of your points using numbered format
(1) First off, DO AS MANY GE’S AS YOU CAN THAT TRANSFER – do NOT waste your time on GE’s that will NOT transfer to USC IF you are SURE you are going to USC and WANT TO GO – you HAVE to take 6 GE’s at USC and by knocking them out at the CC it will save you ALOT of time – I was not sure where I wanted to go and was troubled in deciding to take USC GE’s – obviously with hindsight I wish I did – just keep in mind those GE’s SUCK and getting them done at CC is SOOOO much better
(2) I went into USC having taken calculus – therefore I cannot speak about their evaluation process for a student who has not taken calculus when applying – if I were to guess – AND THIS IS A GUESS – 100% - I would say that no matter what you go in with – if you take the 2 classes they always say – BUAD 310 and ECON 351 and 2 GE’s – no matter if you go in as a poly sci, english, whatnot – if you PERFORM you WILL GET IN – their evaluation should NOT be related to “coursework” because a plethora of students try to transfer in (IE NOT JUST ECONOMICS MAJORS)
(3) There are 2 different degrees for econ – ECONOMICS and ECONOMICS MATHEMATICS – quite frankly it doesnt matter at all which you get elected to – switching between the two is cake and no problem – one just has you spend more time taking calc and higher level math classes
(4) I DONT KNOW HOW USC WORKS – IE FIRST DECISION, SECOND DECISION - meaning if you get rejected as ECON but get accepted as poly science – I DONT NOT KNOW – HOWEVER – I suggest APPLYING AS ECON – because you will start your semester taking an ECON class and ALREADY be in the school as opposed to dealing with an internal transfer – I was placed into ECONOMICS MATHEMATICS with a 3.79 (all A’s and a C in calculus) – my dad had been a guest speaker at the school on a few occasions – maybe that helped – who knows
(5) I DIDNT DO A GREAT JOB ADDRESSING YOUR ISSUES – HOPING MY COMMENTS SHED LIGHT ON A FEW TOPICS YOU BROUGHT UP – ONCE AGAIN there are WAYY to many “what if’s to play” HOWEVER – hopefully this information, coming from a CURRENT STUDENT sheds light on some of the what nots and know hows at USC – let me know if there is more needed to cover

ALSO: To those who are coming here – I came in from Santa Monica Community College and was admitted into the Dornsife school for the ECONOMICS/MATHEMATICS major – Earned a 3.925 first semseter – admitted into Marshall. Had a 3.79 at CC with all A’s and a C in calculus
Hello! I am exactly in the same situation now. I am transferring to USC as junior Fall 2015 from CC. My admitted major is Economics, but I am thinking of transferring into Marshall. Is the internal transfer to Marshall is to applicable to Junior transfers?
Also, I finished Cal 1 and 2 . both Micro and Macro Econ at CC.
