Hi. I will be transferring to Davis for fall 2012. Besides the 10 or so classes I will be taking for my major, I need about 25 more units of upper division and about 10-12 units of lower division outside my major. My major is Anthropology but my other interests are history, music, Latin America, art history. Any recommendations for amazing, memorable professors and/or classes to use for filling out my schedule? Am prepared to take a few P/NP to protect gpa and look forward to experiencing many areas of study while at Davis for 2 years. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

If you’re interested in history, I highly recommend that you take a few classes while you’re here at UCD. I’m a graduating history major (also a junior transfer) and I have not had one history professor that I didn’t like. In Fall 2012, professors Ari Kelman and Eric Rauchway (both award-winning distinguished professors) are teaching HIS 120: World War II! There are 234 spots available so I’m sure you’ll get in if you’re interested. :)

Other great professors and classes include: HIS 142A History of the Holocaust with David Biale, HIS 171B Civil War with Ari Kelman, and any U.S. History class with Kathryn Olmsted, Lisa Materson, or John Smolenski. Also, if you’re interested in philosophy, art history, and literature but want the history units, Intellectual History (HIS 147A or B) with Michael Saler is a MUST. Finally, for Latin American history, you must take Charles (Chuck) Walker. He is hilarious, fun, and very engaging.

I wish you the best of luck on your new journey! My two years at UCD went by in a flash and I’m sad to see it end. Enjoy!! :)

Thank you so much. Just the kind of info I was looking for. I have already mapped out a possible schedule and I have Latin American History down with Walker. I actually emailed him last year about his summer program in Peru. He was kind enough to email me twice even though I was not yet a UCD student. I am fully aware that all the classes I plan to take may fill up so I will have back up plans. I am thinking I will start off with a lower division class to take it easy my first quarter as a transfer. But I would love to take a class on either WWII, the Holocaust, or the Civil War. Are any of the history classes you mentioned somewhat easy? Only thinking of my work load my first quarter and getting acclimated to the quarter system. Normally I am not one to be looking for easy classes. I mostly look for really good professors. I will keep all these names in mind. Thanks!

Tracykins has been the only one to respond so far. Any other current UCD students that could enlighten me about especially fabulous professors or classes?

I would recommend taking anything with american studies professor Michael Smith. Really great professor. I took him in my first quarter as a transfer this year, and it was a great way to start off my UCD experience. he usually has interesting readings for his class, and it is also really easy to get an A. it was really nice to have an easy class while i got adjusted to the UCD experience.

Thanks. I appreciate the recommendation.
