The challenges first appeared in season 20. The better prepared teams practiced in advance. You can be sure that those teams will not have trouble with a stick shift. ?
Kind of bummed the way they are rushing through the season with two episodes per week instead of letting us enjoy it longer.
Was surprised to see how much the football guys struggled with the watermelons, even after the other two teams got it done. I was also surprised how the bottle challenge seemed a bit easier by comparison.
one of the things I like best about amazing race is how they do so many activities that are native and not touristy to the area. I really liked last night in Paris with the art and arcade type games. Just the quick shots of the area around there were beautiful . . . enjoyed that.
And yet they did! The Bottle Practicing boys couldn’t get the car in the right gear (although I’ll say that I’ve started a car moving in 2nd or 3rd gear. Not smooth, but it can be done).
Here’s something for the hard core TAR fans that still bothers me to this day:
Remember the season years ago when the race passed through Vietnam? There was a leg where they had to go to the Hanoi Hilton (POW prison that is now a museum) and retrieve a clue in front of John Mc Cain’s old cell.
Now, all politics aside (full disclosure, I’m not a republican), I thought that was in INCREDIBLE POOR TASTE. We are talking about an American serviceman who was TORTURED as a POW. I thought CBS and the show were terribly insensitive by having his cell be a clue location.
Sorry—I just thought this was a place where fans of the show could discuss things about the show–I stand corrected. I was NOT trying to get political at all–as I mentioned–that episode just rubbed me the wrong way. Seven years or 7 days ago, it still happened!
I love the challenges that are more geared to fortitude VS strength and/or physical prowess, so this week sang to me and my sensibilities! Loved the episode, and also love ALL the “non-touristy” things/locations TAR does, as @bgbg4us mentioned.
I can drive a stick shift, but I’ve never driven on the other side of the road and I wonder if that might have been an issue…although in my head (memory) it appeared the drivers were on the left side of the car…how did they manage that? Does France drive the same way we do here in the states? Hmmm…I think I need to go back and re-watch that portion.

To be fair, I’ve occasionally had trouble finding 1st in an unfamiliar car. I would never mistake 2nd for 1st, but I can how they thought 3rd was 1st.
I finally watched this week’s episode last night. I agree that the season seems to be going by quickly, especially this episode in Paris.
I was surprised that the brother/sister duo have been struggling in the detail-oriented challenges given their computer engineering backgrounds. It took Aparna 11 times to get the art challenge correct!
Also, why were the Bottle Boys complaining that Leo showed no empathy towards them when they struggled with getting the car in gear. Really, why would they? Newsflash–this is a competition and you U-turned them.
I started watching TAR with my kids when they were about 10-12 years old. It was one of the only shows we could all enjoy together and was on before their bedtime. My daughter, now in her 20s, would have LOVED the art challenge, although like some of the racers she would have wanted to stay and just look at the paintings – and I would have liked to look at the costumes.
I’m enjoying this season so much. Great escape to pre-Covid life. And love that they’ve returned to “regular” people as racers. I’ve watched just about every season since it began, except for a few with casting from other reality shows since AR is the only reality show I’ve ever liked. I particularly liked last week’s episode - the castle art museum with costumed people from the paintings, the carnival games museum, whipping the cream (and the pie throwing) were great fun. I like the way in recent seasons they’ve stopped emphasizing the drama and conflict. The football player discussing his love for all things art was priceless.
This is me also. It was one of the only shows I had to watch every week and eventually my older son (now 22) started watching with me when he was about 9 maybe. Then a year or so later my twins (now 19) began watching with us and for a couple of wonderful years we all watched together. We learned so much about geography and other cultures. It was when it was on Sunday nights and it would be bath and pjs and then AR before bed. One season finale I think it was was delayed for a while by a football game and there was no way I could make them go to bed and miss it. Sadly after a few years older son moved on to other interests and then one twin and then a year or so later the other twin and I was back to watching it alone. But even now I keep telling them about things that happened. I’m wanting my twins to grow beards like the volleyball players and audition for it. Their arguing would be tv gold.
I am still processing last night’s double dose of TAR but can say that I thoroughly enjoyed both episodes. As has been noted by others, seeing exotic locales that one might not ever think of visiting is one of the joys of TAR.
It was a fun episode(s)! I was sad to see the couple go, they are cute together. The blondes have been incredibly lucky. I think my favorites are the volleyball players.
