I am interested in taking the AMC 10 as a sophomore in 2017, but my school does not, and never has, offered the contest. I took the 2013A test for fun and got a 118.5, which apparenty is good.
The AMC site shows that there is a university 20 minutes from me which offers the 2017B exam, but am I allowed to take the B and not the A?
When should I email the university for how to signup?
Should I ask my math teacher this year (school starts for me September 7) to see if there is any chance that my school could offer it?
Could I even take the exam at another school nearby?
You can take the 10B exam without taking the 10A exam. You might be thinking of 10B and 12B, which you can’t take both officially in the same year.
Ask your math teacher first to see if your school can offer it. If not, I’d contact the university or a nearby school that offers it. I’ve never taken either exam anywhere except my own HS, though I’ve heard of such accommodations.
I took the (wrong) exam at my local university last year, but I sure was able to sign up.
If said university has a page for precollege programs, it may be there. Otherwise, check the math department’s stuff.
If you’re gonna send an email, don’t worry too much over when you do that. Just ask, and they’ll respond at their leisure.
Definitely ask that teacher, too! If I recall, it’s inexpensive for the school to proctor it. Maybe try to drum up interest, get support from other math-people.
There is no harm in at least bringing it up to your math club coach or math teacher. The worst they can say is “no”. Maybe they could even get you to take it at another school.
You can take both tests, A and B, as long as you have a place to test. Maybe you can go to a math teacher and ask them if they could help and sponsor it. Registration doesn’t start until January so emailing colleges right now would be futile.
It does not cost much for a HS to register to host the exam, so the above advice about asking a math teacher or principal is sound. Start the process at your school now, as it may take a while to obtain approval. IIRC, each booklet of ten exams is something like $20 perhaps. Good luck!
