AMC 12 / AIME / SAT math thread...

hey everybody...who here wants to talk about those three tests??

i'm wayy out of league age-wise (i'm 24 and been out of college for a couple years...went to RPI and did electrical engineering)...

but yeah it's been buggin' me lately...back in HS, i got an 800 on the SAT math (kinda had a claim to fame in my HS for that)...and then on the AMC 12...i got the highest in my grade...a 98.5...GRRRR...there was this one question i answered wrong...if i had just left it blank, i would've gotten a 101 and qualified for the AIME...it's been bothering me lately....

been revisiting those types of problems...and now i can usually get like 105 or 106 on the AMC 12 (old tests)...and maybe get around 2 or 3 right on the AIME...

anybody else wanna share their experiences / thoughts / insights?? :)

Hi, I’m 12 and I’m in the 7th grade and I love the AMC tests. I got a 100.5 on the AMC 10 this past year. I’m home-schooled so I can do all my math at Art of Problem Solving!!! Search it because it is one of the best programs for these type of math problems. Something they call discrete mathematics (number theory, counting and probability and the like). Also exploring topics in depth rather than doing a ton of make-work. Last year I took the SAT and I got a 720.

Happy Problem Solving…

Oh! i took AMC12 last year and got a 100.5 as well. how lucky i am that i got into AIME.
but AIME was super hard,i think.
I left a lot of blank during the test so i guess that will help to get a higher score

well, I got 114 for AMC this year
though I got 9 questions right for AIME and got a total of 204, i still missed the qualification mark for USAMO (208.5)…
my experience is to do past year AMC questions.

You went to RPI? I went up there a few weeks ago for a college visit :D.

I got a 144 on the AMC 10 this year, but missed the qualification mark for USAMO. I only answered 8 questions correctly, but I have two more chances to qualify.

well i remember the only type of preparation i did for the AMC was just i went on the website and did a few problems for fun…i never cared to learn how they solved stuff that i didn’t know how to do…see to me that kinda took the fun out of doing those types of problems…so even now i still have the same amount of “knowledge” or so to say, on how to solve these types of problems…

haha i took the 2008 AMC 12A for fun yesterday (under the timed 75 min…no calculator), and got 100.5 this time…apparently qualifiers for AIME was 97.5 that year…i would’ve made it by a decent amount too!!..ahhhhhhh…

AIME problems are fun too…i can usually do the first two or three…occasionally a number 5 or 6 might be doable for me too…

and yessss BigWorldJust i did go to RPI…it’s a great school…one of three great and amazing tech schools in the northeast…MIT, RPI, WPI (in that order of prestige haha)…so what did you think of RPI??

AIME and SAT in a same thread??? Completely different staff…
