AMC 12 American Mathematics Competition

there are practice questions online that you can do specifically for AMC

AMC Prep: AOPS 1
AIME Prep: AOPS 2

google up past AMCs and work them and see solutions. And Art of Problem Solving is quality.

I am aroused. Will look into purchasing AOPS 1. Senior year... but better late than never I suppose.

is there any way i can purchase a used copy of AOPS volume 1 or 2?

Trust me, I tried to do that back when I was in 7th grade, and couldn't find any anywhere (no on wants to sell their copies), I would suggest to not waste time looking for one on the web and buying a copy from their website. I have all of their books and they are absolutely amazing! (Well, they suck for prep at all levels higher than AIME, but are great resources for pre-USAMO contests).

found some used ones on Amazon.com but can't be sure if their just the solution manual. I might as well but it from the AOPS website. Though my parents don't think it's a wise investment. Instead they want to buy me an iPod touch...sigh...

and DataBox, how much did the books themselves actually help you? I know you scored pretty well. But was simply due to innate ability? Like right now I score around a 126 on the AMC 10...

so AOPS vol 1 is for amc 12 or just amc 10?

AOPS Volume 1 is good for AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12, and easy AIME problems; AOPS Volume 2 is good for difficult AMC 12 and AIME

To be honest, the books are good in solidifying your basic problem solving skills and will easily help you go from a 60 on the AMC to a 100...but beyond that they will probably just increase your score by a couple of points...

In my case, I had done AOPS 1-2 back in middle school, but haven't really looked at any of my AOPS texts since high school began. Although, the books probably helped me develop a strong base in math, I think innate ability also played a crucial role in the AMC. So essentially, it's a combination of practice and natural abilities for me...

so AoPS vol 1 and 2 are a baseline, but after that which books will help get a good score? I mean theres lots of books they recommend, but which ones did you find helpful besides AoPS 1 and 2

so getting the books wouldn't help for me? I guess I should stick to practicing w/ past AMC & AIME tests then....

Um, I actually just practiced past AMC and AIME tests for most of my prep last year (probably less than 5 hours altogether). I didn't do any books for AMC/AIME prep, practically all of them were geared for USAMO prep.
AoPS 1 is a baseline, but AoPS 2 is by no means a base line, it is a relatively high level text.
I think completely doing a couple of AoPS texts would sufficiently prepare you for the AMC and AIME.
@meadow36: You already have a relatively high score on the AMC 10, so I would recommend doing past tests.

It's a good competition, definitely. If you're more science-oriented you should consider the usabo/usnco/usapho circuit too...and usaco if you like informatics.

AMC is too damn easy lol

Do it, since if you do well you can very well add your score to your merit list!

Hmm...if the AMC is so "damn easy" what did you get spideyunlimited? Considering that your location says New Delhi, India; I doubt you have actually taken the AMC, the highest score for anybody from India on the AMC last year was a 90something...that doesn't say far too much...

I've taken practice versions of your national math olympiad, they are about the difficulty of the AIME, so I really doubt that the AMC would be that easy for you....

nope, since our school never told us about AIME, I only got to know of it when i came on CC, which is a few months ago. And I've tried questions from previous years papers which I got by asking few teachers of other schools.
Lol, high school math in India is quite tough dude ;)
Anyway, I'm not here to criticize man, don't flare up. Chill :)

Math rocks all the way ;)

BTW, The highest score is 90 something because most top schools here (in fact, most schools of any type) have no idea about AMC as yet. :)

Don't IIT kids have harvard as their statistical safeties?
