For those of you taking the AMC 12, are you guys going to prep for it?
I take it on the 12th, at my school, so not a lot of time to prep (I doubt you need more though).

How do you prep for an exam like this? Where can I find questions from previous years?

Preparation makes it seem like actual work, and not just a contest you take every year for fun...but I guess if you're really into that sort of stuff even the preparation can be fun.

Enjoy the cool contests while you can. Soon you'll be in college and all you get to take is the Putnam (six hours, all proofs, wake up at 7:45, definitely not as fun as the AMCs).

hey, I was also wondering what kind of questions AMC 12 involves... I took the AMC 10 last year and thought it was relatively easy. It says that topics are up to calculus, does that include sequences, conics... stuff that just needs memorizing?

Do both testing dates. That's what I'm doing at least. It also gives me a chance to finish AoPS vol. 2, since there is absolutely no way I'll finish it in time for feb. 12 with USABO being around the same time.

memorizing stuff won't help for contests like this. you have to be able to understand it really well, and apply it in situations where normally you wouldn't think to do so. that being said, there's no calculus on either of the AMCs or the AIME or the USAMO.

the point was more that "memorization is necessary but not sufficient."
if you don't remember math, of course you won't do well, but you have to do more than just remember stuff. besides, what's the fun in memorization?

The calculators never helped that much to begin with so that changes little really. Although the overall difficulty of the tests may be slightly lower (though not the number 22s and higher)

you don't really need volume 2 for AMC12, btw. AoPS vol. 2 is more for the last 5 questions on the AIME.
