Just started the Caltech app and noticed the section for AMC/AIME scores, and got slightly worried, not because it might highlight my weaknesses in math but instead because it made me realize many people will have much mroe impressive scores than i will for the AMC 12 (104) /AIME (8). What are the community’s thoughts on this? Am I stil in a decent position?
Also, how much influence would Top 50 nationally for USNCO (chemistry) have on my chances, given that the math scores are not special? Probbaly going to apply EA to both MIT and Caltech, hoping for the best and wish all you fellow rising seniors best of luck as well!!
Best of Luck, mate. USNCO top 50 sounds pretty impressive, and since these are STEM schools, that may make the difference. Your AMC score won’t hurt you, though, cause it isn’t bad, and you have the Chemos olympiad anyway…
Puleeeze…
There were fewer than 250 Juniors in the country that scored above 8 on the last year’s AIMEs combined.
This sounds like the “OMG, I only got a 1580 on the SAT, can I get into a decent college??” that gives CC it’s reputation. (Except that a lot more students get over 1580).
@RichInPitt ah i see. my bad, didnt realize it came across like that
This is kind of a late reply, but 8 on AIME is good enough. High Honors on the USNCO National Exam makes up for your AMC score. I think you should have done pretty well as long as your essays, grades, and SAT scores were solid.
@gammafunction I got waitlisted from both Caltech and MIT, but I’m committed to UPenn and ended up with a handful of other top notch options, so I am still more than happy
@spinCaster15 Congrats!!! As expected, you are doing fantastic. Have a great time at UPenn!
