So, I just took the AMC and I'm expecting a score of 102-114.

I wanted to inquire about how this test is weighted in terms of college applications. I know MIT asks for these scores. Any advice?

What grade are you in?

Did you take the AMC10 or 12? If it's the AMC10, then actually you didn't qualify for the AIME. If you took the AMC12, good for you, you made it if you actually get the score that you did. I'd list it, since MIT actually asks for them, and since it's generally a prestigious competition. However, you should probably make sure to mention that it leads to the USAMO/spell out the entire thing, because I realized during my interviews that a lot of college admissions people don't know what the hell the AMC is if they're not mathematically-inclined. (coughCarletoncough that lady told me she hated robots and math in school, and then all we had was like an awkward science)

Yeah, so if you get in the AIME, list it, because the AIME is like the top 10% of all AMC takers, which last year didn't even reach 100 for the AMC12. If you don't, then it's up to you. If you have more important ECs to you you should probably list those, but it's always worth it to give a quick mention of the AMC, considering it's a voluntary competition and all.

AIME is top 5% of AMC takers, not 10%

lol i bombed today. probably got around a 90. w/e im a senior

i thought it was way easier than last year
i did the bare minimum 14 questions rest blank=100.5
i actually had another one right but didnt want to risk
but i think i got the 14 right so hopefully ill qulailfy

Are we allowed to talk about the test questions yet?

No, don't talk about the test questions yet.

The number of people who qualify for the AIME each year is in the thousands.

AIME I & II 2007 Statistics

Some people who qualify don't take the test. Perhaps there was confusion between the AIME and the USAMO in one of the previous posts above. USAMO qualifiers number only in the hundreds.

No, I have yet to talk the AMC test. My school is doing it on the second date, which is February 27th.

I'm pretty sure the AIME is capped at 10% or something. If it was 5% then there was no way my friend managed to get in last year with 97.5. Qualification for USAMO is a bit more complicated: it's a combination of both your AMC score and your AIME score, which is multiplied by 10.

I'm dismayed from seeing that table on how few girls take it compared to boys.

I'm in 11th, took the AMC 12

From page 7 of this year's AMC teacher's manual:

idk about guys
but my teacher gave us the answer sheet to the amc so every1 who has him knows if we qualified or not. but then agen he's the head of the math dept so i guess thats y he has the answers so quickly. thankfully, i made it. lol

Wait, thats not supposed to happen.

yea..i thinks he's supposed to wait like a month before he releases the answers... i think its supposed come with your actual scores... but i guess he just wanted to give it to us

He doesn't have to wait a month, but he shouldn't have shown students the answers on test day (as I am interpreting the reply above). My sealed packets of solutions say they are not to be opened until all of the tests have been mailed in for scoring (which they have been, for my testing group).

tokenadult...my teacher showed to us the day AFTER the test... so all the tests were mailed out already...sorry for the misunderstanding

lol. I got a 99. This is my second year taking the test/I started it at my school... so frustrating!! 1 point away... unless less than 5% get 100? haha unlikely. Ah well, looks like nobody qualified this time. A bunch of people in the 90s though.

Time to prep for AMC 12B!!! hahaha

I got a 102 and a 9 on the AIME. w00t.

Aah, are AIME results back? I haven't heard from my guy yet, but I know I only could have gotten 6 at most (unless there were answers that were 42, which is what I answered for all of the ones I didn't know).
Anyone know how much you need for USAMO?

I qualified for the AIME, did really well and then qualified for the USAMO but didnt do that well on the exam, does that still look good though?
