AMC Question

I did really, really poorly on the AMC. As a freshman, I accidentally took the AMC 12, but I have know idea how well I did (I just know it wasn't high enough for AIME). As a sophomore, I was absent and coudln't take it. As a junior, I scored a 99 (which would have been a 109 using the old scoring system, not that that matters). In my opinion, the AMC score is probably the weakest part of my application, and probably not a good represenatation of how I do in math comps (for examplle, I ddoubt I finished in the top 15 in my HS on AMC, but in other math comp I finished in top 3 of HS several times). Should I list it, or would this hurt me?

Thanks!

I got a 97 junior year (on the old system), and listed it. I'm now a tech frosh. I don't think the score will make or break your application. If you can show aptitude for math in other areas and especially passion for math and science, my guess is that it won't make much of a difference.

At least you liked math enough to take it.

I know a VERY intelligent caltech sophomore who got 98.5 junior year. frankthetank from AoPS got 132.5 and 98.5 his junior year (that was weird). AMC scores vary A LOT

Scores can vary A LOT for individual people, hence showing that AMC scores aren't taken as that authoritative. Hell, I'm such a lot of Axlines never took the AMCs.

^^I've seen AMC scores go down by 20 points between sophomore -> junior year just because people took the AMC 12 instead of the AMC 10. It could've been that.

Any kind of "test" will not be accurate indication of your math skills(because of careless mistakes). That said, I think AMC(AIME) is a MUCH BETTER (but not perfect) indicator of your math ability than say SAT Math section or other competitions.

AMC 12 scores can vary a lot from person to person (as for AMC 10 and AMC 12 - yeah, it kind of depends on person - for some people it's easier to qualify for AIME via AMC 12 since one only needs 11 questions right [or so according to the old scoring system]).

Wrt AMC 12 scores, getting a score like > 120 will definitely help you (and such high scores are generally indicative of talent), whereas scores of < 100 won't really affect your application that much (and can be attributable to numerous reasons)

I would put it down just because it showed that you cared enough to take the test... Thus, I would argue that it can't hurt you.

99 on the 2007 AMC 12 A would've been enough to qualify for AIME.

Huh that's weird. I was positive the cutoff was 100, and I certainly didn't take the AIME. Maybe I took the AMC 12 B? Haha I didn't even know there was a such a thing as the AMC 12A and 12B.

the cutoff was 100...but that was really close...

cut off for A was like 97.5 and for B was 100
100 is like the default, normally they don't curve it.
Don't worry too must about AMC or AIME scores. It is only like 2 lines in your application!

ya... I got a 2 on AIME............. and I don't know whether to put it down or not :(

People, you should stop being embarrassed of your achievements.

(Besides, putting down your AMC score, but no AIME could be interpreted as though you gota 0 (which is still fine, but 2 is better)).

But what if one qualified for AIME with an AMC10 score? The boxes only indicate AMC12... wish we didn't have to bury it in Supplemental Info...

they don't have a box for it. so you either leave it out or put it in supplemental info.
