AMC Scores w/o qualifying for AIME

Is it worth putting an AMC of mid 90’s (missed cutoff by 3 points) if I come from a rural high school and self studied after hearing about it it in less than 3-4 months?

A score in the mid-90s is decent, but if you don’t give any context for only having 3-4 months of self-study, colleges (especially HYPSM) won’t be impressed, considering they have 8000 AIME qualifiers and 250 USAMO qualifiers to choose from.

what does AMC and AIME mean??

Nationwide HS math exams.
AMC = American Mathematics Competition
AIME = American Invitational Mathematics Examination

how do we take these exams?
are they good for college?
so if u qualify for AIME or something how is that for UCs?

@SREE33 much of this info can be found on MAA’s website, please search there first.

In short, top scorers on the AMC 10/12 are invited to take the AIME (~8000 participants); top indices are used for USA(J)MO qualification (roughly 250 or so take USAMO and another 250 take USAJMO), high USA(J)MO scorers are invited to an intensive 3-week long training camp called MOSP (or MOP) where the US IMO team is also selected.

@justwantco11ege it won’t hurt listing an AMC 12 (presumably?) score of ~90, although it won’t really stand out among HYPSM. For example, I was a USAMO qualifier and was waitlisted/rejected from Caltech.

how valuable is getting to AIME tho- specifically for UC’s?

@SREE33 I don’t know if the UCs know much about AMC or AIME. The Caltech and MIT applications ask specifically for these scores if you have them. I don’t know of any other colleges that ask specifically for them. The UC application allows you to list them under “Awards & Honors” for which they have only 5 slots.

Carnegie Mellon also specifically asks for them, assuming because of strong CS and Engineering program there.
