I'm planning on majoring in physics or another math/science area. I have a 2370 SAT with 800 SAT IIs in math II, physics, and chemistry. I have been taking the AMC 10/12 tests since freshman year but I don't know how they compare. I have a 106 and 104 on the AMC 10 and a 93 on the AMC 12. Are these considered low scores? Should I be concerned? Can I just omit them from my application?

I never got the impression that the AMC scores themselves were something you listed on your application. However, if you advanced in the competition, then that might be something.

But listing your AMC scores certainly isn't necessary if you've already scored so high on the SAT and SAT IIs. Colleges will already see that you're good at math and science. :)

AIME are good to list, but those scores, if anything, will help you

Well getting a 150 on any AMC shows much more mathematical skill than a full score on any Mathematics SAT.

You can omit these scores, but I think a 100 is OKAY. Not great or phenomenal, but probably worth more than an 800!

Schools like MIT actually have a place for these on the application, so if you're applying there, then the pressure's on. Above 100 is pretty good (and if it makes you feel any better, which it probably won't, I got a..78...on the AMC 12, even though I was school high scorer on it, my school's not that good!)

Were any of the scores AIME qualifiers? If not they were close, and depending on what school you're looking into, I'd put those scores down.

I think it just shows more depth to your abilities. Some people do better on SATs than math contests (like you), but for many other people it's the other way around. Showing you can excel on both can only help you. I probably wouldn't mention any scores below 100 though.

no. list them. it truly is important. it shows that you actually care to take an intiative in nat'l competitions such as the AMC

I wouldn't list unless 120+ on the AMC12.

would a 3 AIME be worth anything at all? It's pretty low but should i jsut put it on anyway

The vast majority of people don't even qualify for the AIME... doesn't it seem like if you even qualified for it, it would be worth putting down?

cory123 - definitely put it down. Less than 10% qualify for AIME and the average score is something like 2

I never qualified for the AIME though. Do I still put it down?

if you have like around 100 just put it down. its better than nothing right?
but i still have to say those scores aren't great, but they can't harm you

does making AIME since 8th grade help? that's all i got

we have these kids that make USAMO since 8th grade at my school

If they hadn't changed the blank ones from 2.5 to 1.5 I would have qualified. Gah!

Thanks for all the input everyone!

hah, the AIME freaked me out so much I never even wanted to know my score. Now I'm kinda curious...

thecomisar: just email jeremy for your score , he has it on am email i think

Yeah, yesterday I messaged him and asked about it. Gosh, who are you? I think I know, but I'm not sure.

i added you on facebook like a week ago >.<
math club secretary next year >.<

Yep, you're who I thought :)

Wait... so on my app for MIT should I list AMC 12 if I got a 105? I'm finding out my AIME scores soon, but I expect it'll be around a 2 or 3 or maybe 4 or 5 if I'm lucky...
